Title: THE FLY Quad?
Post by: Ari on March 18, 2011, 09:55:55 AM
anyone know what this is?
30"x40" thick paper stock.
Is it a genuine reissue? or a repro?
Feels and smells vintage.

Danke.

I agree. Here's a current Ebay link to an original from 1958...

I'm sure Paul -- the King of the Quads -- will weigh in shortly.

Great poster Ari!  Even if it is a re-release (which it probably is) it is still better than the drab US 1-sheet!

I like it too...unfortunately my quick search of the usual places for poster info have turned up nothing...

Yeah  IF its a real poster its certainly a reissue, just not sure if its an original cinema poster, and if so, when its from.
Its in BAD shape though, even masking tape.  I bought it with a bulk lot of Aussie posters, which in itself was unusual, as the owner had them all from a cinema in Sydney (a few thousand posters) mainly daybills, a few one sheets, and this. He never bought posters, just held onto them from his theatre. So I thought it was dd to be in his collection.

There's no text on there (that I can see) to indicate a re-release which you might normally expect to see and it carries the same tagline as the original 1-sheet. Considering the film originally came out in '58 with the sequel quickly following in '59 and a double-bill not long after there doesn't seem much of a window for a re-issue around this time. The look of the poster does not feel particularly 60's either if it was indeed printed then.

Could this poster be an 'out of town' printing for use on the original release in second-string venues? The design is slightly less 'alarming' than the four-colour printing and as such this poster may have been deemed more suitable for more conservative areas.

Either way, I've never seen it before and it's definitely not common. Will be interesting to see what Paul says and if anyone has the UK pressbook for extra info.

Paul.

I've looked all over and can't find that art anywhere, Ari.
I think you've got something special.
You should send it to me so my boys can get a better feel for it....  wynk

Did they make military release quads in the UK?

Just got back from work, and noticed this. I've never seen this art work for the Fly before. It's definitely a Quad, but when the fly was re-released it was on Double bills, once with Return of the Fly, and once with Wasp Woman. This said Some of the problems with Quads is even on a double bill feature, there would be single bills printed. A guess would be an early re-release with Return of the Fly, As the Cinemascope logo is still on...

Is there any printers info on it?  as this may help date it. Also does it say who released it?

And is it for sale. ;D

I must have a dig about on this one. At the moment I'm sticking to my guns, early reissue. Maybe Terry ( Quadbod ) knows something...

Hi, Folks!
Just got home from a weekend fair - and just as intrigued as everyone else by this - but sadly, unable to add anything new to the discussion - except to say it's always fascinating when a single example of a previously unknown poster appears out of the blue like this - thanks for posting it, Ari.
Best wishes,
Terry - www.quadbod.co.uk

Just had word about this, by all accounts its actually a 1st release style B:

"this is a scarce poster, and as there was no real re-release of THE FLY, or new quads, it's clearly a style B quad (just like there are full colour AND and style B quads for PSYCHO... and in the case of the B PSYCHO, the Hitchcock with watch, the B is harder to find)."
