24 x 36 Close Encounters 1-sheet?
« on: May 14, 2010, 08:31:21 PM »
I have a 24 x 36 Close Encounters folded 1-sheet that has a copyright date of 1977 and "Litho in U.S.A." Would this be worth anything? I must have bought it by mistake many years ago thinking it was 27 x 41.

No love for CEotTK !!!? :P

Honestly it depends on the art work used and whos buying .. Its probably a commercial piece .. and if the art is similar to the theatrical posters then you might as well use it as wrapping paper .. But as you can see with some commercial star wars posters they can still retain some value due to the alternative art work only used on those commercial pieces .. So post up a pic!

I've since picked up the 27 x 41 version, so yes I love CE. This one is the same artwork, just in a smaller size. It's also folded which tells me it wasn't retail? I'm just guessing.

some people tend to fold posters to make them look more authentic .. It may not be commercial it could be some other kind of advertising piece .. soundtrack or otherwise .. are there any extra/missing wordage on the bottom?

Overall though if its the same artwork it not going to be worth a whole lot seeing as most collectors want authentic theatrical posters .. The only chance it had was unique artwork :(

The only thing cropped out of the photo is a Thought Factory circular logo and copyright 1977 on the left side of the words "Thought Factory" that can be seen in the photo at bottom left.

Thought Factory was a commercial poster producer and released several variations of posters for bigger-budgeted films.
C.K. MacLeod Collectibles has one of the other versions (and I believe they released 4-6 diff CE3K) for sale here at $24.95.

While some were machine-folded (like yours) for promotional mailings, they were widely sold rolled.

MacLeoud also has other titles from Thought Factory, like THE DEEP and KING KONG 1976.

Yeah, Mel...I like that one, too.  That was my favorite ship (next to the Mothership) in CE3K.  Nice catch.

Yeah, I bought this poster a year ago and it showed up destroyed in a toilet paper tube.  (The absolute WORST thing about Ebay).

Took me another year to spot this one.  That is the seller's picture.  Hopefully, it will make it safe this time.

Putting silverware on the floor to hold the poster down?  Is he trying to say his floor is so clean, one can eat off of it :D?
