An interview with the British designer and artist Vic Fair
« on: December 02, 2013, 01:25:11 PM »
Hi all,

Continuing my series of interviews with film poster designers and artists, today I published an article looking at the life and career of Vic Fair, one of the most important designers ever to work on British posters. In a career that lasted close to forty years Vic worked on multiple iconic British posters, including The Man Who Fell To Earth, two Hammer posters, the withdrawn A View to a Kill one sheet and many, many more. I've been fortunate to have spent time with Vic over the past two years and this article is the result of hours of speaking to him about his life and career and looking at the incredible archive of material he has kept from his time in the industry. It features plenty of photographs that include never-before-seen concepts and unused artwork, including two for Hammer that are exclusive to this article.

I hope you enjoy the read: An Interview with Vic Fair

This is incredible Ed. I don't know what you do for a living but if you're not a journalist you should be. You have not only extracted (as always) a great deal of interesting information from your interviewee  but have also presented it in a really eloquent and readable style. Well done and thank you!

About the pics .. are those pieces that Vic still has? Especially the concept artwork? Or were they just digital images that he had or you sourced for the article? I'd really like to get one of them if possible. ;)

Thanks gents!

Mark, I'm a designer not a journalist but I appreciate your comments. I'd never dare claim I'm anything but a try-hard amateur when it comes to wrangling the English-language, but it's good to hear that the articles are at least enjoyable to read!

fallen: All the photos with my logo in the corner are images of pieces from Vic's personal archive that I took myself. They are not currently for sale I'm afraid. What are you hankering after?

Amazing as always Ed!  By the way, is that a UK subway that he keeps framed?

Thanks Z and Harry. It's a 40" x 60" and you'd call it bus stop size (the poster that would be displayed on the side of the shelter) over here. Are US subways the same size (I'm not a collector of that format)?

Some of my favorite concepts were ..
Black Emanuelle
Death Weekend
Death Line
Clan of the Cave Bear

Referencing Bus Shelter posters .. the modern ones we have in the US are 48"x72" not sure if there were different sizes during the 70's-80's

Another excellent article Ed, really enjoyed it. happy1  It's great you are meeting these people still, and getting first hand info for us all to read, and I Thank-you for that.

On the poster size thing, the 60"x40" over here is a UK 4 sheet. UK bus stop posters are actually metric at 1200mmx1800mm, So quite close to 48"x72"..
It's more than a Hobby...

Great as ever, Ed! Interesting, informative and always easy to read as it's so well written. Well done.

Although I must say that these articles aren't good for my wallet; I just added another poster to the want list as a result :)
