Good post , Rich RE your chart.
Very interesting.

are you talking about my comparison charts?
facts are facts. They don't have any bias. Some people don't want you to know all the facts because they don't think the truth is beneficial to them and they're probably right, that it is beneficial to them.

I'm not interested in a false narrative to make myself look better than other people and I eschew that kind of behavior in others. Moreover, usually those who like to make people believe they are better than others are quite the opposite on some levels. If the truth hurts, then you need to look inward, not outward

oops, grammatical correction:

Some people don't want you to know all the facts because they don't think the truth is beneficial to them and they're probably right, that it isn't beneficial to them.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about.
Was just interesting to see the comparisons side by side as such.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about.
Was just interesting to see the comparisons side by side as such.

Adam, this is the hidden reality about some auctions and about people in general - they only give you the facts they believe support them, and not a complete picture about the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

for instance, here's a question about any auction: how can you say you have the best values for collectors but you also pay the most to consignors?
Simple math would say that is not possible unless you have favorable consignment rates. If most of what you sell goes for a low price and you have a sliding commission scale that goes higher as prices get lower, you cancel out any added value that a consignor may have benefited from. You can only go so long before people point out these facts

But there are other issues as well and ultimately, it is up to the consignor to decide what works best for him

are you someone who has a very valuable item, but doesn't need to sell it very fast.. then I think Heritage is the best option for you, especially on over $1000 items and particularly on rare, super pieces worth many thousands

are you someone who has a large collection of  $1.00 to $40.00 posters and time is not a factor? Go to that other guy.

If you have a collection of 1000-2000 pieces valued from $1.00 to $1000.00  I believe that I can pay the consignor commensurate to any other auction. Period.
I believe I can also process and sell your collection and get you that commensurate value faster than either of the bigger auctions and I can certainly process the first portion of your material faster because I have a deadline that is only 2-3 weeks before the first auction you would participate in. Consignors whose material was sold on 8/21 had a deadline of 8/4 and were paid on 9/30. That is 57 days. Neither of those 2 auctions can help you out that fast, if you need your money fast.

Now in all fairness, there is another option - MoviePosterExchange.com
Peter is my longtime pal, he has a great site and I believe his time frame for smaller consignments+payment is equal to my own

so in other words, there are lots of options and each has an equation. My equation is fast processing +low consignment rate +commensurate sales results = MoviePosterBid.com is an excellent choice.

Yeah, I fully understand what you are saying especially RE the sliding scale and what bracket your items fall in.
What is your stance on reserves? Do you allow them?

Let it Be lobby set sold by Movie Poster Exchange on 9/10/12 card by card
(http://www.movieposterexchange.com/sold_item.php?mode=search_sold&offset=&toshow=&search_sold=let+it+be):
#1 - $86
#2 - $71
#3 - $86
#4 - $104
#5 - $86
#6 - $86
#7 - $86
#8 - $86
total sales price at MPE: $691*

The purchaser of these cards, then consigned them to Bruce's auction where four of them were first sold as a single lot (http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/14897134.html):
#4, #5, #6, #7 - $206  (vs. $362 purchase price)

The consignor either then sent the rest to Bruce to sell later, or asked Bruce to list the remaining cards individually (hoping not to lose 50%+ on the remaining cards?) and they were sold individually a few months after the first sale.
#1 - $62 (http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/2630769.html)
#2 - $53 (http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/11545810.html)
#3 - $107 (http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/1626734.html)
#8 - $39 (http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/11516463.html)

Total sales price: $467

Sean, what's really shocking about these numbers is that the buyer, who chose to sell elsewhere rather than maybe seeing if MoviePosterExchange could repeat the first auction, sent them where - even though it's always been claimed that he could get the better prices - not only got $224. less when selling them, but the consignor who paid you $691.00 only got back $323.51 after the resale, losing $366.49

that's a alot of money to lose

geez.. I forgot one more pertinent fact that this thread shows on page one: 8 of 14 people correctly identified that in the case i cited with my recent Lady in the Lake hs purchase, that the buyer's premium is meaningless, if it had any meaning at all to begin with

and don't forget the below portions either!

Rich, Bruce, you have both commented on other people's arguments in the past.
I think you both need to remember what you said to these people and so just let this go.

Make it 9:7.

I find BP off putting, so I simply don't go to those auctions.  I want more than I can afford, so I don't need them, and spend my money at places where they don't try to play tricks with me.

I understand your position Jay, but it isn't relevant to the question asked which was very situation specific.

however the poll stands, at 9 for and 7 against

plus we have this added information

Ah, but it relevant because the BP auction is a non-starter for me, so the hammer price is irrelevant.  You saw that in one of the early responses (crowzilla's?) where he wondered how many additional bidders there would have been and how it would have affected the hammer price if BP wasn't in play.

The BP is there solely to sap the living breath and joy from those struggling through the financial crisis, on their knees looking one last pleasure before starting the inevitable nightly course of baked beans
