My 40x60 collection
« on: March 04, 2010, 05:04:42 AM »
I guess I have enough now that it can indeed be called a collection, albeit a small one.  Because of the difficulty, both in terms of finding them and financially handling the price, I only grab these for my favorite films and/or images.  All of them, I intend to archivally frame and put up on the wall.

That Downhill Racer poster is extraordinary

How difficult is it to find 40x60s in good condition? Do they tear and get damaged really easily?

They are somewhat difficult to find in great shape.  They are cardstock, so they weather the storm better than one sheets, but there were also a lot less of them.  They tend to be more susceptible to moisture.  Also, if they ever tear, the tear propagates very quickly so it needs some acid free tape.  The most often found damage on them is what can only be called "crinkles".  I am not sure what causes it, but I have an idea it is from being rolled tightly for a long time.  The top layer of the image begins to separate from the substrate layers.  For this reason, any 40x60 with a lot of dark colors is especially difficult.  I had a restorer tell me these crinkles are almost impossible to repair as well.

... not to be confused with UK 60" x 40" posters which are usually printed on standard paper stock rather than card and are referred to as 'two-sheets', 'four'sheets' or 'bus-stops' depending on your preference!

Terry, I have some Bus Stop posters that are printed on very heavy stock, a couple are even printed on some Vinyl type material.

Nice Collection Schan, the U.S. 60X40 is a size I don't have at all. May have to keep an eye out for some.

Thanks Jeff!  The Strangelove is the last addition.  There are not many left that I want in that format.  Maybe 2 or 3 that I am actively seeking.  And, there are probably about 5 that I would pick up if I happened to find them at a good price.

great posters.
Can I hijack the thread briefly. What is it about Downhill racer that makes it so coveted?
I know, or believe Schan would have seen the film. And I know many people have. But I see some people who I just dont think have seen it, don't know why, just a feeling, and still they want the poster/s.
Is it the art/s? or because its in the list of "cool must have" posters?
genuinely curios (there's other titles that I wonder the same thing about, but seeing the poster above reminded me I always meant to ask).

AHain great posters, I have NONE in this format, but I love card stock posters.

Thanks Ari!

I actually love the Style B art for Downhill Racer  It's pretty eye catching, and looks really good with the ink saturation on card stock.  As far as cool, must have posters, I'm not sure.  I generally thought the Style A art was more highly regarded, but I am not really a fan of that one.  As far as the movie goes, its kind of mediocre really even with an all-star cast.  I think I paid $70 for the one I have though, so I was happy about it.
