An interview with Tyler Stout on the creation of his Akira print
« on: November 09, 2011, 10:24:14 AM »
Hi all,

I've just posted Tyler Stout's fantastic Akira screen print to my site and also conducted a small interview with the man himself on the creation of the print. He generously supplied me with some work in progress images and he mentions some other interesting titles he'd love to work on at the end of the interview.

Here's the interview in full.

Hope you enjoy.

Your site goes from strength to strength, Ed! Great job! Really interesting to see those work in progress shots.

That was a nice read, I've always liked Tyler, from the odd email correspondence I've had with him, he comes across as a really decent guy. The fact that he gave away this lush print to a few lucky peeps does indeed speak volumes. Must say though, I think I slightly prefer the alternative colour scheme (the final photo in your post)...it has a nice warmness to it.

Interesting that his favourite anime seems to be similar to mine...I guess he must be in his early 30s too. A Totoro print would be fun...although being UK based I'd miss it which would hurt!

Thanks Tob, much appreciated!

I agree that Tyler always comes across as a genuinely nice guy and he's definitely a movie nerd like us!

What did you think of his Assault on Precinct 13 print?

Since he's a friend of mine, I can say without reservations that he and Sarah are amongst the most genuine and nicest people I have ever met.  A far, far cry from the frenzy he generates on some boards.  Really simple and grounded couple.

Nice interview. Ed.  It's always interesting to see a print in progress.

What did you think of his Assault on Precinct 13 print?

Hmmm, Assault on P13 is a personal favourite (Napoleon and Bishop are great characters and I love siege films), but I think it’s a tough film to express in an exciting looking poster/print (I can’t think of any theatrical release posters I really like for it either). The focal location of the film is a big ugly looking police station and for me, a lot of the film’s appeal comes from the dialogue/chemistry of those under seige and the faceless and infinite enemy outside which is tricky to express in a print. That’s not to say I don’t like the print (I like the slightly stripped back style (for Tyler), the colour palete and the representation of the characters is good), but it’s just I would probably select other pieces by Tyler if I had to choose favourites.

I know you’re a big Carpenter fan, do you like the print?

Cheers T :)

Tob: I'm a huge fan of the film too but I agree it's not an easy film to sell visually. Heck, look at what they did with the quad! I'm not sure I'm going to go out of my way to grab Tyler's print (I'm not a Stout completist by any means, he's just done so many great ones!) but may pick one up if it's reasonably priced.

I really dig these Film On Paper exclusives, Ed. Keep 'em coming.
Incidentally, doesn't Tom (HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN) Hodge live in the neighborhood?
Maybe 'the Dude Designs' Interview would be a worthy Film On Paper project...

I'd really like to interview Tom Hodge one day - just need to pick up a Hobo poster first!
