One of my favorite artists of the fantasy genre passed away May 19, 2011, something I just learned of moments ago, six weeks after the fact.
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=32407While I only know of one movie poster that Jeff painted (DRAGONSLAYER) I, like many of my fellow comic-book fans, grew to know and love the work of this extremely talented artist.
For a few years in the 90s, I became good friends with Jeff. He coached me, advised me, became a pen pal, even sent me hand-painted holiday cards done in his unparalleled primitive style. I posted some thoughts about him and his contemporaries Barry Windsor-Smith, Berni Wrightson, etc., in an APF thread somewhere here. Many people compared him with Frank Frazetta (who passed away last year), not so much for style, but for the passion they both committed to canvas. I truly regret having fallen out of contact with him over the years and I certainly would have attended his funeral. He will be sorely missed.
I know that I posted this link here some time ago, but for those who haven't visited Jeff's site, do so...you will enjoy it.
