Patience paid, off, it seems. THE INVISIBLE MAN WC, offered for years by Eggbert, finally sold in early August. It was interesting to see this card listed month after month, over the last several years with various prices attached to it.
It had been restored (missing upper left corner, stains, holes) and backed.
It sold (a BIN) for $9750.00

The "Egbert buying it himself in a fit of rage" seems even more likely now after seeing this card in Bruce's Halloween auction.
Otherwise the purchaser is setting himself up for a world of hurt.
After sitting for years unsold, the new buyer would have to realize at least $12,188 on the quick flip just to break even

Blimey...I know the bidders at Christies have deep pockets, but that is a lot. I wonder if the Disney/Lucasfilm news helped that one up? Nice prices on the Bond quads too, Bond anniversary and Skyfall contributing to that a bit too perhaps? I love some of those travel posters, they're beautiful.

Psychiatrists should wait outside of Christies and round up clients.

The other way of looking at it is that most of the purchasers are wealthy rather than stupid. If some are smart enough to create great personal wealth and their perception of loose change is thousands of pounds rather than pounds why should they bother with the hassle of ebay or online dealers/auctions? Christies offer the convenience of allowing you to take your winnings home with you when the auction ends.

As do all auction houses, and don't forget. It takes at least two bidders to get to that kind of price. Most of these buyers aren't poster collectors, they are just wealthy people who want a talking point on the wall. It's a bad thing as many times over the years, a seller with NO knowledge of posters, or even Film has said to me, "I've checked the price on Christies and I know what it's worth....?

These "wealthy" people should have a minion running round to find the best deal. They would still be over paying, but a lot less, and it wouldn't screw with prices...  ;)

something that many people also forget with wealthy buyers - Time is Money.

let's say you make $300 an hour (or even more)
is it worth your while to try to save a few hundred on a poster (or thousands) when it may take you several hours more?

I was an auto mechanic once and managed a service station in Manhattan (and I was just 21).
Today however I am not, so I pay a mechanic to work on my car because I don't have the time, or there isn't a cost benefit to me.

totally agree, but even so £5K is an enormous sum for a Star Wars Quad.

The biggest question is how do i get mine in the next auction :)

Better question is how can you get a hold of the losing bidder...

This rare, CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (Decla-Bioscop AG; 1920), was auctioned yesterday (Nov 3) by PosterConnection, Inc, in San Francisco.

It's description:

"Anonymous - Germany. Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (D). Lithograph 1920. Size: 27.5 x 36.2 in. (70 x 92 cm). Printer: no information. Condition Details: (C) was folded, on linen, professionally restored tears and paper losses in image area and at the left edge, top and bottom margins have been recreated, partial restoration of DECLA logo and some lettering at the bottom left."

It had an estimated price of $42,000.00 - $100,000.00.

The realized price was $118,000.00

Artist: Fritz Rostadt

The German expressionistic elements in this piece are evident and right in line with the art direction done in the film.   clap clap clap

Thanks for posting the result... I was curious if it would break $100K.  It looks like it did easily...

Awesome poster.

A work of art it is.

Considering the rarity of pieces from CALIGARI, in general, the small amount of restoration and re-creation on this poster didn't affect the price in the least. Its rarity its preservation in a complete form seems to have been the ultimate factor, methinks.  clap clap clap

A question to ponder, though-- would the bidding have gone higher, had there been no areas (top and bottom borders, part of the logo and part of the artist's name) that needed to be re-created?

I don't think so.  What are you going to do, wait for one in better condition to come along?  Could be awhile, and maybe the next one is in worse shape.  If you wanted it and had the dosh to get it, I'm thinking you'd go all in for this one.

ps: the reason I can tell the Enforcer is a bootleg is because there is no broken glass on the dashboard

The last 2 that Bruce sold (both on linen), went for $3050.00, in May of 2010 and $3300.00, in December of 2009.  thumbup

Considering the opening bid of $15.00, I wonder if the seller knew how desirable this poster really is. And with it being a new seller with zero feedback, this could have been cause for some to steer clear (except those who KNEW what they were looking at  ;) ).
