After seeing the Heritage stuff, really makes me realize how lucky I feel that the vast majority of that stuff is not my style.  A lot of that stuff does have amazing art, but it's not something I can relate to, so I'd rather see it in a museum or something like that.

Luckily for me, what I like most is also what I can afford, mostly 80s and newer stuff.

I got out bid on The Day the Earth Stood still on Heritage - I am guessing there was only one other bidder, I left my top bid many days ago and had gone out for the day of the auction so wasn't watching what happened, but there was a few bids required to beat mine and I feel they got it at a good price, so well done and congrats to the new owner, whoever you are...

...who are you?!

I doubt it will get framed... maybe they bought to invest?

Steve

first you watch Tarzan the Ape Man and then Tarzan Finds a Mate.
Maureen's outfit is essentially a tight buckskin halter and 2 buckskin panels for her bottom with open sides. That outfit specifically was one of the top reasons cited for the creation of the Hays Code which spelled out how men & women could be depicted in films. Another film cited for being what was determined nearly pornographic at the time was a film for which the Berwick Discovery had a poster - Ten Cents a Dance with Stanwyck.

Mel, he's saying sometimes you just need a Stargate or two in your collection...  The "I don't care what you bastards think because I love this one!" poster.  But since I am not a Hammer fan that POS Werewolf from Heritage will do...   ;)

One of the primo collectors on this board told me "60% of my collection is junk."  Same is definitely true for my collection, especially all the cheesy girly posters (ex. "Employee of the Month"). Just lately I've tried to avoid buying mediocre stuff and concentrated on the good stuff.

Congrats on the Terminator quad BTW....

Sure is.

Yowza - hard to believe they were showing this in the 20s.  Proving yet again that everyone has ALWAYS been a "horny bastard"....

We know Mel.  You are a true collector at heart...  I (as I am sure the rest of the forum) am still trying to figure out your collecting style...  I think that is were some of the beef is.  It doesn't matter, collect what you want.  I am so glad you trashed some of those junk posters. Every time I think of that DS Grosse Pointe Blank you sent me for free, I am glad you thought it was junk because I treasure it...

And please don't mistake my comment about the Werewolf poster.  It was not intended as a negative comment, but to illustrate that not every poster is for everyone... I don't like horror (don't shoot me) so I wouldn't give you $50 for it...  It's a beauty art-wise and if it's what you are into then that is all that matters.

Congrats on the Terminator quad BTW....

Thanks Mel.  I am really proud of it.  I paid too much for it, but it just puts my Terminator collection on the brink of complete.  I have the Czech small and now the quad so only one left IMO...  I may try to upgrade the small Czech for the large one, but I am quite satisfied to have the substantial pieces for that film in my collection...

Wow, great Evil Dead poster.  If it is legit that is awesome.  I think the Aussie video poster used similar-ish chainsaw artwork, but it is a considerably smaller poster.  I've never seen this one before...

I had a sneaky feeling the seller was wrong about the measurements thats why I went ahead and fired a bid out on it (just had no idea it was gonna go that high). Its gotta be an international of some sort but the tricky part is when was it printed and for what release. One things for sure I have never seen this poster before and that is so cool! The thing that is throwing me off the most is the fact that it is rolled. What are the chances of this poster that no one has ever seen before popping up rolled from the early 80s. Crazy odds. You would think it would be some beat up old folded poster.

What is interesting, too, is that the paper doesn't seem to have a real gloss to it, but appears, at least from the photo, to more of an overall, matte finish.

Curious, indeed.

Did you win it Severen?  If so congrats!

I asked the seller to verify the dimensions and he said he made a mistake... it is 27"x41" so it is the correct size for the time period.  He also said he's had it for "25+ years" so that is also good news if true.

As for the name difference (Evil Dead vs. The Evil Dead), I've been doing some research there as well. The original name was actually Book of the Dead when it premiered in Michigan in 1981.

Raimi then met Irvin Shapiro who helped trying to get a wider release... he was the one who suggested the name change.  According to this awesome site on the film's production and release (great read by the way!), his naming suggesting was "The Evil Dead", but I found this Variety ad (dated May 3rd, 1982) which shows that they also dropped the "The" for at least some of the early US screenings (sorry for the large image).

Notice any similarities in the image, title font and tagline?  That Chainsaw-over-the-head still image was commissioned well after filming had wrapped by Shapiro as he wanted better marketing materials.

According to IMDB, the movie was shown off and on throughout the world between 1981 and early 1983 at various small screenings and film festivals... and (per the above link) it actually was picked up for UK distribution (and nearly immediate video release) starting in March 1982, well before New Line picked it up for a wide release in the US.  That means those full size 30x40 Evil Dead quads (w/white borders) pre-date the 1-sheet by more than a year!  For those of you familiar with the quad, it is also titled "The Evil Dead," not just "Evil Dead."  However, I think the US and UK are the only regions where they kept the "The" for the final release.  As we have seen (so far at least), The Netherlands, Turkey and Australia all use the same title font as this mystery poster and they drop the "The" in the title.

This all lends credence to this poster being an international 1-sheet, which, ta daaa... that Evil Dead site's collectible page shows and indeed lists it as an int'l 1-sheet poster (folded and everything)! To see their poster section, scroll WAAAAYYYY down towards the bottom.

Even in that small, shitty picture above, it clearly looks to be a matte finish poster as it would have reflections along the folds otherwise.

So is this case closed?  Are we confirming it to be an official New Line printed, really rare and really awesome int'l 1-sheet?

No sorry for the confusion guys. Unfortunately I didn't win it. I was bidding on it and had it to the last second and then it jumped up to like $385. It looked like 2 different people must have sniped 2 large bids right at the end. I wish I would have had the balls to just crack off a large max bid looking back now, but honestly I didn't think it would get that kind of action. It was one of those posters that kind of caught me off guard cause I hadn't seen it before. I was at work just kinda screwing around on ebay and saw it with only a few hours left in the auction so I really didn't have any time to research it before the auction ended. Anyways at least it has made for a nice discussion on here and gives me a new poster to keep an eye out for. Thanks to everyone on here that did some research on it. Although I fear I might have just developed some new competion with hunting down another one of these pieces. Think this one might even fall into the unicorn category.
