If it helps this is the blurb I wrote up to help explain the rarity of posters for this film... the blurb is for a super rare Japanese B1 advance I'm going to be selling in the near future.

Moral of the story... tiny theatrical distribution + huge cult following.

Good info. Thanks again, Matt.

Wow I can see why that poster would be sought after in addition to the rarity - it looks amazing.  A lot of the japanese posters are really "busy" with graphic's and collages, I like these clean ones incl. Birds you posted in the other thread.  Nice job hope you take paypal... ;)

Was it Paul in another thread looking for good flicks... Jeff after Halloween you need to watch Boondock Saints its definitely a great movie.  Very under the radar at the time and never got the attention it deserved including some great roles/performances.  It wont change your life, but its very entertaining.

A cult movie if ever there was one, this movie grossed only $30,000 at the domestic box office (yes you read that correctly), but as of 2009 had $50 million in US video sales almost solely from word of mouth.  Boondock Saints had an extremely troubled multi-year trip to the big screen -- there were three aborted production attempts by Miramax, New Line and Paramount before finally being financed independently for only $7 million.  It was shopped around at Cannes but no studios were interested in distributing it.  After finally getting an independent distribution, it only screened in 5 theaters (yes, 5) for a single week!  And despite being released theatrically in another dozen or so countries, the worldwide box office was a laughable $400k.  It's pretty safe to say that almost nobody saw this film in the theaters -- which makes this advance Japanese B1 all the more rare!  Easily the best art from any country and with only a tiny title in Kanji, it could almost pass for an english language poster.
Moral of the story... tiny theatrical distribution + huge cult following.

Agreed wont change your life but it was pretty cool.  Also then follow up by watching " Overnight: the rise and fall of Troy Duffy"  all the footage was shot and documented the journey before during and after the movie. Focusing on Troy who wrote the movie and his huuge ego.   Lets just say he pissed Harvey Weinstein off pretty royally.

I also have heard the Columbine Massacre (you know the two kids in black trench coats with guns that shot up their school less than a year earlier) was heavy on the minds of the US and probably affected a having wider initial market release.  I am just speculating on that point not a hard fact.

That documentary sounds cool too, Jason.

And the Columbine shooting sure sounds like it might have played a part in this film's limited release.

Great info!

I bid on 11 items and was outbid on all of them.  For 8, I was the under bidder.  :(

Regrets...I have a few..but now again...too few to mention..

The one that got away. NOT SOLD (clearly I should have gone for it). Or...maybe not. I never  liked this artist renditions of Bogart. The heas is too small. The hands are too big. His body doesn't look right.

Italian. Dark Passage. Art by (see poster)

$2105.00 was the winning bid on this lightly restored HS, tonight, for The Man From Planet X (1951) on EMP.   WOW!!   clap clap

The gel backing process was done on this piece. I like how, once the restoration work is completed, that gel backing is removed, leaving the poster really much as it was, prior to it being worked on.

It would be cool to know who does the restorations for stuff that appears at auction, especially those that are gel backed.  I've had one poster gel backed by Poster Mountain, and one by Lumiere, and there is a stark contrast between the two.

Anyway, that one is rad.  cool1

Yeah, I mentioned it here.  http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,9805.msg182666.html#msg182666

The Hustler 30x40 was done by Poster Mountain, and the Scarface 40x60 by Lumiere.

Great info, there, Brandon.

Did you prefer one studio's efforts and/or technique over the other? Do both feel similar? Or is there a marked difference?

In my experience, PM's technique for gel resizing is much better than Lumiere's.  I'll add a comment in that thread.

Frankie 1951RR TC, (gel backed) sold this afternoon on EMP, for $3300.00   clap clap

What a great looking LC!  bed1  I like how the drawn body of the monster was retained from earlier ad material but used a photographic image of Karloff's head, instead.

What is everyone's thoughts on this Thunderball poster that finished a few days ago

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221926464234

I had my doubts because of the size. It looks very similar to the reprints that are available.

Well, it's got the Stafford and Co line, but it has been massively trimmed.

Also, the fact it is rolled..?  Not sure rolled posters existed in '65?  Did they.

The Stafford & Co should be nearer the bottom of the poster but this one is about 3cm from the bottom looking at the tape measure on the photo. I didn't think you would find one rolled considering the age, but might be mistaken. Someone has paid either a lot of money for a repo or got a very good deal on a rare poster albeit trimmed

Little known fact about this poster.... it actually has a very light grey background, not white.

Original:

Original on linen (easier to see grey tint to paper):

Known 27x39" reprint (notice high placement of Stafford line):

I'd say someone got hosed....

It was the high line that got me with it. Thanks for the images, would still love one of these but the misses doesn't share the same enthusiasm for posters!

Think you are right about someone getting stung on this.
