someone once sent me french 47x63 for Jackie Brown that were rolled/never folded

so they do exist

Well actually French rolled posters are for the most part metro posters and are badly print comparing to french folded posters which come from the theaters. Now and for about 5 years there are some rolled posters in Theaters too, good quality so but those which were printed before 2010 maybe 2009 are poor quality posters. The only good quality posters which are rolled (printed before 2009) are printed on vinyle and those are fucking awesome and rare

In the past I've found unfolded quads and ones sheets that only ever show up on emovie and elsewhere folded and I continue to be amazed that some have survived in the condition they're in. For me folds do ruin a poster and stop me appreciating the art / design as much. It may be controversial but that's my view. Don't get me started on linen-backing too!  puke2

As T says, there's a lot of patience involved in collecting posters how I like 'em! Recently, however,  I've realised I'll have to compromise on a few Thai posters as there are some titles that are rare in any condition.

It's good to know that you're one less collector to compete with anway. thumbsup.gif

I have a 1958 quad, art by Chantrell unfolded which I totally love. I was and I am still amazed it survived in that condition.

But for vintage lovers like me folds are rarely an option but most likely the norm.   And LB to me is a question around "must do", not a choice, only when the poster is in a delicate condition. I have a lovely (maybe scarce?) 30s poster with Kay Francis that you couldn't even look at it, let alone touch it without tearing it apart. LBd now you can look at it (yes framed and on my wall) :)

That said, I really applaud yours and T collecting "unfolded" "near mint" "rolled only please" habits. In fact you both have inspired me to trying to find one particular 70s poster. I want it unfolded, rolled. I have it but folded and...yes... had to LB mine, so I am in the "upgrade"  business now... ;)

That is not my experience of French posters. I always try to get rolled versions and they seem just as good if not better than the folded versions they replace. Having said that, I only collect from 1986 onwards.

I must say I think this all just boils down to personal taste. I for one hate folded posters.  To me it takes away from the art. Now that being said, I have only collected a very few items pre-1980, All of them are folded. I also have a LB Kong from Argentina, which because of the age and the paper being brittle, it was done solely to preserve the paper. Which to me is acceptable.

Collect what you like, anything else is just noise.....

At the end of the day, it really boils down to what makes us, as individual collectors - happy - and happy with what we like to collect and are searching for.

All have slightly varying parameters and taste. That's what keeps the hobby and seeing/reading what we all like so interesting. Otherwise, it could be some homogenized, boring mix.

Beautiful WC. It is described as "board-backed" with retouching to areas of Davis' face where the card had once been folded, but there isn't a lot of material like this out there from Dark Victory (1939). Great movie, and it's a fantastic image of Davis, too, imo.  bed1

Sold (high bid) of $585.99

I almost bought it, Jeff.  But the board backing kept me away.  It usually sells for $800 without the board, so I'll look for that.

I know the backing board is there to reinforce the original card stock, or maybe it was rebacked onto another piece of vintage WC stock. Tho, from the description, it is probably a new piece of card.

I would like to have some titles, is it possible ? I own about 4000 french posters and don't get so much rolled posters, the few I have are poor offset quality, big ink points on them. The only one I saw from theaters and rolled with large size were printed in 2009 or near but I can remember a theater release of 007 Casino Royale from 2006 which was D/S with a good quality.

Yes, the printing on rolled Frenchies is definitely not as sharp as on folded ones.  But beyond that, what really bothers me is the fragility of the rolled paper.  It feels like folded posters are printed on thicker paper, while rolled ones, which are meant for the subway, are thinner, very easy to damage.  Is that something you noticed too, Zoongrew?

Oui Thierry vous m'avez acheté pas mal de trucs, je me souviens même de votre nom de famille que je ne dévoilerais pas ici bien sûr !

Concerning what you told about the fragility of the rolled paper, I don't feel it thinner than the folded one but what I know by experience is that it doesn't bear any shock, the ink will break as glass. Folded poster is the original one for me, I always seen folded posters when I went to the cinema so I collect and sell only that even if I own some few rolled ones that I never display.

I must admit I was surprised at the level of passion this generated.
I never intended to criticize Thierry's, or anyone else's collecting preference.  Just tried to explain what floated my boat.

Jay, there is no criticizing anyone, and even if there is, we are all entitled to our own opinions, so it's fine.  Sometimes it gets heated, but at the end of the day, we're just talking about posters, so who gives a rat's ass.  It's all good.

People spend a lot of money on posters that are really worth nothing is all I have to say.

Carry on.

Get past page 3 of tonights auctions, that is some sad results for the next 8 pages. Terrible.. As others have state, Bruce really overgrades the newer stuff, probably hurts the bottom line quite a bit on the non-top tier titles.

I see.  You're right, but a lot of it was really in bad condition.  I really don't understand the point of auctioning 4 good condition posters of Exodus.  Why waste the time?  But you're right, there are a lot of posters that should have done better than that.  My bad.  I was only looking at the first page.  Maybe people are getting tired of seeing the same shit week after week after week.

I'm thinking that when the same stuff can appear, even a few weeks later, or over and over, that your point is probably true for a lot of collectors out there, T.

How does it feel to be the last known person in the world to have hung onto a poster of Cher in a thong (including bevis and butthead for credibity of course)?

Are you sure?  Cher was rockin' the thong better than most, but the poster was nostalgia.  Those were good times, back in the 90s.   8)

Most of the stuff on the first 3 pages, when sorted from high to low prices, of tonight's auctions at eMovie are from 70s and 80s films.  Considering that several of the titles appear for sale very often, they do well.  Of course, they're the exception to the "flooding the market" rule, as they're classic films.

I had a couple from recent movies in the auctions tonight, that did relatively well.

Under the Skin - $40

Spring Breakers - $120.  The guy who won it, AgentOrange, is a member here, and he seems to be a big fan of the movie.  I'm surprised he didn't see this thread...Buying New Posters Directly from the Studios

Congrats Brandon and Agent Orange.

Brandon, in your research and familiarity of this poster/film, why do you think it does as well as it does and with some consistency?

It's a sorta cool photo and all, but what makes the poster break 100 bucks, in your opinion?

The spring breakers he had won tonight has the ratings block unlike the ones you can buy direct which lack the ratings block and was a really good price at $120.
And that under the skin would go for 80-100 on ebay another steal on tonight auctions.
