there is probably one guy in the audience who just got his trust fund and is going wild spending more money than they were previously allowed to.
the underbidder is probably "making them pay"

otherwise we have to account for 2 bidders who would have done well to get some education

I'm just getting home... and don't see a final result / sale (or anything in the listing on Bonhams) for the Mark Of the Vampire OS.

It doesnt say "withdrawn"... its simply skipped over (Lot 347), in the results and isnt there, going from Lot #344 to the next, #349.

Not a clue...  dontknow.gif

He also was the consignor of the 1949RR Wiz of OZ 3 sheet. That sold today, too, for $3200.00 (hammer price).

UPDATE:

The Mark of the Vampire OS did NOT sell yesterday. (The person who posted to MOPO was actually at the auction, and thought it had sold for some reason  dontknow.gif).

Apparently the high bid got to $100K, but with the low end estimate  being $150K, it looks to have been passed on.

If LAM isn't a horror movie then this remake wouldn't be either, correct?  Maybe that's why horror fans didn't value it as high?   :P

Mark was not an exact remake of LAM. Some story elements and characters were changed or added to.. and of course, playing up on the Browning/Lugosi success with Dracula a few years before. Browning did make this version more of horror/vampire-themed story.

In LAM, (from the reconstruction and script) there is a scene where Chaney is shown putting on his vampire makeup, to go under cover, so this is quite different than films which featured a blood sucking creature/monster (Nosferatu, Dracula) as a principle character.

In the end, the audience learns, too, that Lugosi and Borland were also 'actors' in Mark -- hired to help trap the real murderer.

This film, tho, was more promoted to be a horror movie-- and the Lugosi/Browning re-team was certain to help that element, too.

not sure why anyone would bag on the LAM poster.
who cares if it is or is not a pure horror movie - It's a Lon Chaney movie.
The reasons for the poster to bring big dough is that no matter if it is a horror film or a crime film - or in actuality, a hybrid of the two - it is a classic film by film fan standards and the poster is at this point at least, one-of-a-kind.

whether the people in this thread, none of us (including myself) who could afford it under any circumstances (winning a lottery withstanding) think it is over-pricedm under-priced, correctly-priced or even worthy of any price is insignificant. It is a historically important piece and the people who bid could afford whatever they want. If Kirk or Ralph or anyone else was the winner, all they care about is what they think, not what we think.

Todd is one of the most dedicated collectors....and one of the boundary pushers in our hobby..
He routinely ” tests” the market to see what direction his pieces AND the horror market are heading...he does this by switching his high end posters at different major auction house venues.....if you get a chance to buy the 1997 Sothebys auction  book where he sold The Mummy one sheet....and an assortment of super rare posters from the Golden age of Hollywood...its a time capsule of where the hobby was....it was a daring single collection sale

And Todd's MUMMY OS sale held that high sales record all these years until just this past weekend... so that is quite an achievement.   clap clap

Not sure I would call a court-ordered sale in a divorce case brave, but ok.
I know when I got divorced and lost some posters, I was not thinking brave at the time.
