the other looks to be pretty fine, aside from being stapled to the frame.

That's pretty funny!  That's like saying, "except for the seized up engine, the car runs fine!"

Great looking Metropolis poster. It has that great futuristic look that was in keeping with so many other posters released at the time, too.  clap

A nice sales price, too!

Seems the big winner at the Cinevent Hollywood Poster Auction was a set of 80 stills of actress Ann Todd (as well as other actors). The estimate for this lot was $300-500.00 yet the published, winning bid was $15,000.00  :o. (Is this maybe a typo on the site?)

http://www.hollywoodposterauction.com/session_lots/11056/show/ANN_TODD_STILLS

In second place was a WC for Casablanca, going for $8000.00. It sold for well below their estimate of $12-15K.

http://www.hollywoodposterauction.com/session_lots/11549/show/CASABLANCA

Many lots were passed on, including a rare WC for Werewolf Of London. Bidding did not meet the reserve of $6000.00

The estimates were a joke. The best stuff sold for the reserve (plus 20% BP)

definitely not........."Published at that time in 1926" probably is a "lost in translation" kind of thing.  It possibly it just meant the film year and doesn't translate properly or the seller actually think it is.

Metropolis wasn't released in Japan until April 1929, so the 1926 date on the ad description page was an error.

In inches, it measures approx 17.5 x 24.5

Here is a side by side with a page taken from a Japanese magazine from the film's release (on the left). The image/art of the robot looks to be very similar. But the English title on the one sold, is a bit curious and interesting on Japanese first release material:

This site gives more insight into the release in Japan, as well as a few other examples of the magazine advertising examples that were used there:

Like, for example, that Scarlet Empress WC. I thought that went for an excellent price. The person who picked that up got a wonderful deal on a magnificent and rare card. He really did a great job. He's (or, maybe she) a intelligent and intrepid collector.  !!!

When someone goes for material of that caliber... can there even be a question?

No, but it is 100% for sure an original 1929 release poster.
And seeing the other usual suspects in the bid history means they realized it also.

Where's the proof this is a 1929 poster?  It looks like a 1960s re-release.  Was it common to include foreign languages on posters back then?

A Japanese magazine ad, from 1929, for Metropolis. The English title (with the same font style and Werner Graul or re-created art ) are used here, too.

I'd love to see this image in color (unless it was originally printed in B/W?)
