Maybe if some people spent more time looking for a girlfriend than stupidly buying too many posters they would have someone to discuss a 'conversation piece' with?   :-*

I'm sure the "anti-auction outing" crew score bodacious babes with as much skill as they score (swindle) posters from uninformed sellers.  8)

Actually, displayed movie posters ARE great conversation starters.  Every single person - even the femmes - who walks into my office starts talking about them. The typical federal employee is not too beautiful - mostly a bunch of overweight 40s/50s schlubs - but one of the most beautiful women I've ever met runs one of my agency's programs. She came into my office the other day to acquire my usual brilliant and incisive legal advice.  She said "I noticed your posters and you should read this article in Vanity Fair about Pulp Fiction." We started talking about the hobby and movies. (Like most people, she assumes that I actually watch movies and doesn't understand why I consider them an "art" collection.) Too bad she's married with kids but I'm angling to ask "so do you have any single friends...."

Well, they have more money to spend on escorts.

That really somes it up.  And once they do, it morphs from a conversation starter to a creep factor.  Good luck.

It's always wiser to start collecting after you meet the one.  If it is before, hide it all and plan a step by step introduction.  One poster the first year, 10 the next, 100 on the third... on so on.  At that point, she or he is stuck with crazy.  Of course, I'm sure there are exceptions... like 2 crazies meeting each other.

I guess i must be lucky then, I only met my current girlfriend about 4 months ago and already i have convinced her to hang some posters in her own house...only doubles that i can afford to lose (just in case :P) she got them framed herself... she's got tons of empty wall space. No way i could hide my crazy with all the collections i have so i had to find an equally crazy partner  :P

Most odd.....Bar my first love when I was 5 years old, and Alison when I was 8 years old. Every Girlfriend I've had knew about my collection/collecting.
Most of them encouraged it, saying if that's what makes you happy, as long as we're not suffering financially because of it. In fact 3 or 4 of them regularly
went to auctions and film fairs with me, quite often at auction bidding more than I wanted them too, but they were having fun.... ;)

I've never known any Girls/Ladies who have been against it, so I'm guessing they are not the norm.......or just don't love you enough!

most women cotton on pretty quickly that they are looking at a big pile of cash and not junk! the ones who think its just weird are just thick.
but most women ive known are quite blaise up until the point it impacts on the space for their crap like clothes of shoes ? whatever none sense they spend money on? hyper-peptide cream?
I don't know much, but i do know what my eyes are telling me!

Never had space issues with them either. Yvonne gave me Half the linen cupboard for my mags, one of the bedrooms as a poster room, Yes the smallest, but also one
of the reception rooms as my Home Cinema. My only stipulation is she didn't want the house looking like a Museum, or gallery, but neither did I. Then she goes and puts 3 posters up in the front room....Go figure.

You're probably right Rich on the price. However I think you're only paying for the "UNIVERSAL - Mummy"-tag. I honestly can't see why anyone would like to pay $1800 for a cheaply made, unrefined piece of paper from 1951. You could buy so many much nicer posters for that money. In regards to rarity, that strikes me as odd. Why would a Realart re-release be rare? They probably printed a lot of lot, didn't they?

Could the Realart prices also reflect the idea that because any original paper for The Mummy is so scarce to non existent, that this later Realart reissue material is really the only option for collectors to have something from a time that is fairly close (20 years) to the initial release year?

It looks like it was more quickly cobbled together by Realart (from an image/artistic POV) but still, it is from one of the classic Uni horror films.  8)

Yeah, but I bet those three are not exactly chopped liver, but some of the classiest images- sort of like Sean's display at home.

Here's what some female visitors to my apt have said:

(1) "OK for a bachelor's apartment."

(2) "Your posters are creepy and I'm tired of you being broke all the time.  You have to choose between me or them."  (That relationship ended quickly.  She was Russian and obsessed with material wealth and moved on to some sugar daddy.)

(3) "When you told me about it, I thought it was weird but now I think it's cool."

(4) "A visual assault! Better warn your guests ahead of time!"

One of them Is Revenge of the Creature, and the other two American Werewolf in London, and the Dirty Dozen...

In case you haven't noticed, women collect posters too.  And for the record, no need to hang on a wall chopped liver, we have something called ''taste''.

no offense to any women, but in my many years & many women, I have found that while they like my stuff to some degree, the fact that it is money that is not "invested" or money to buy a new couch and bedroom suite is always a negative to them. I met my ex at a comic book convention and even she complained about it even though she regularly went to conventions with me and helped me sell (if you can call it help). I always told it my art collection was our investment. She always had some snide remark about it

Years later, after we had been divorced for some years and during one of her annual trips from Cincinnati to visit me at Cinevent in Columbus (where she's from and yes, we have a good relationship) we were talking to Kelly Demaio and Kelly asked my ex what she was doing for her retirement.. her answer?.... "Richard's collection was supposed to be our retirement"

one day I'll figure out women.. Probably be my last moment when I say "ah.. that's it!" and breath out..

I think both are a little correct. Beauty of course is in the eye of the beholder and yes you could buy what you consider to be much much nicer posters for $1800, but you could also buy a lot worse (i.e. daybills). As for rarity, I think we already know that it's not how many they printed, it's how many survived and even more important how is the demand compared to the number that survived.
Demand for original material from the Mummy is of course high among horror collectors and really for the $1800 this one-sheet sold for, yes you could easily get an original herald from the film (when they surface), but it most likely would not even get you a decent shape dead scene lobby card. This Realart release was the only re-issue of the film, so for 99% of the people who are interested in obtaining something from the Mummy they will have to settle for something from Realart.

But you would be surprised how rare some of the Realart material can be. When I first started collecting, a lot of horror collectors snubbed their noses at Realart material as it was worthless re-release junk, but time has proven that not only is some of the Realart material quite rare, but that it can actually be better than the original release material.
And a reminder that the Realart material is older today than the Universal originals were when I started collecting.

Using House of Dracula again as an example and look at Bruce's archives - he has only sold 4 individual lobby cards from the Realart release of House of Dracula in the past 20 years (and two of those were laminated). That's half a set in 20 years out of a couple million items sold.
One of those four cards was this fantastic scene card of the Frankenstein monster:

To me, this card is better than any original release House of Dracula scene card and probably the best Glenn Strange monster scene.

Or take this card from Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man:

When I purchased this from Bruce's auction nearly a decade ago, people said I was crazy for paying a record price for a Realart scene card.
But to me it is a top 5 Universal scene card and is the ONLY scene card (original release or Realart) to show two monsters in the same scene and I proudly display it on my wall amongst some original cards (thanks Bruce).
I would love to complete my Realart lobby set on Captive Wild Woman, I've upgraded my original release set to all beautiful mint cards, but I can't even find the missing cards from the Realart set to complete it in any condition.

Easy tiger...nothing to do with taste but rather that I had no doubt that Paul had some tremendous items to display and not the run of the mill stuff.  Kind of like Sean's Casablanca lobby card on his wife's kissing wall.
