What is reasonable

I have a poster that is about 3x2 feet that I want to restore. It is heat mounted on foam core. The first task will be to get it off the foam core. I have lifted about 25-30% of the poster off the foam already. I need someone who can finish the job. Based on the success I would like to do some minor restorations. This would entail fixing a small area with a water stain and color filling in a few spots where their are scratches.

My dilemma is an appropriate price. I have contacted one person who has a business as a poster "restorer." He said the he can do the complete job for around $200. For the amount of work that might be required this strikes me as a little on the low side. There is the adage of "if it seems to good to be true----." At the same time I contacted a business that does serious paper and art restoration. They suggested a cost between $3000-5000. As I am not dealing with the Mona Lisa here I think that is beyond my scope.

What might be a reasonable range to do this job? I don't think this will be too time consuming.

I would contact Mario Cueva @ https://www.lumiereposterrestoration.com/

You can send him pictures and he will give you an honest estimate.

I think both prices you listed are stupid.

When I took the poster out of the frame I noticed a couple of the corners had lifted. So, I tugged a little and the poster came up pretty easily. Then, I took a letter opener type object and tried lifting the poster way. I got about 25-30% of it up without much trouble. But, there a areas that don't want to cooperate. At that point I decided I did not want to push my luck. I am thinking much of what is left will come up pretty easily, but certainly there will be areas that might require a little skill. I heat mounted this poster to the foam core about 40 years ago.

By the way, I have not received a response from Mario.

What is the poster in question? Do you have pics?
Who quoted 200? (Was it posterfix)? And 5000?
The prices seem way out of whack.

As T suggested, Mario is good. He should respond back...

I have attached a couple photos.

Because I am in the midwest I contacted a couple restorers here. Not Posterfix. One is the protege of the other I think. They quoted about the same price. On the high end I was directed to a place that does serious art restoration. I suppose that would be like taking your Buick with a bad muffler to a guy that does high end car restorations. He can most likely do the job, but you'll pay his normal rate. Anyway, I am not going there.

Still waiting to hear from Mario.

I went to a art and framing shop the other day figuring the owner might have some knowledge of trying to undo his work. He said he has gotten posters off of foam core in the past. One method he suggested was flexing or bending the foam core to loosen it up. Has anyone ever tried that?

What email did you use?
All I know is that his communication has gotten much worse (was never great), and I had to email him several times to get one email back for the last piece he did for me, which was over the summer.

I am still sitting on this poster. I contacted ACA Paper Restoration on the east coast. They are suggesting it will cost $900-1200. Still no is confusing.  Quite a spectrum of prices.
