In context of that style Eric Tan is perhaps the most true talent of all. If you've seen his X-men, Indie, Wall-E and Incredibles you know why. No tracing from a projector. He's utterly original, though animated (2D) style doesn't appeal to everyone.
So Ansin is the new Stout? Perhaps. What impresses me with Ansin is 99% of the artists collaborating with Alamo do so to do "their thing". They apply their unique art treatment to a movie title: ie take some familiar faces and scenes from a movie and redraw them in their style. Danger, Stout, Phillips, etc, all do this.
Ansin, in contrast, is adapting his art to accommodate the movie. Not only the movie but the era. He gets film art and OHH is it beautiful to see! Phantom and Wolf Man are two of the best in 13 years. Yes, Rhy's Cooper is the other mad scientist I envy. His Gremlins almost feels like a would-be authentic 80's quad. He let the movie lead.
