Calling all CLOCKWORK ORANGE experts ... !
« on: October 31, 2010, 05:47:01 AM »
Hi, Folks!

We have recently acquired the following item.
It measures 60" x 40"
The only text on the bottom edge reads 'PRINTED IN GREAT BRITAIN'

Any ideas ... ?

Thanks for any info.

Best wishes,

The lack of folds also implies commercial, I wouldn't say re-print as some of these are put together just for sell-through, and are not copies of Originals.

Thanks, Paul!
Good point re the 'reprint' terminology. As you rightly say, safer to reserve that term for copies of original material.

Hi, Brude!
It's on medium-weight paper-stock - definitely not card, but not flimsy either.

I remember at freshers week there would be loads of guys selling enormous posters for your student rooms. Films like Clockwork Orange, Betty Blue, and lots of concert posters. i reckon it's one of those type. I had an enormous Prince Sign of the Times poster and it must have been near on 60 x 40

I have this poster in storage and I recollect the paper is a similar thickness to a US 30 x 40 poster - closer to card than paper and quite brittle. Too thick to fold. I have never thought it was a commercial poster - until now, I hadn't seen another since I got mine 6 years ago - wouldn't they pop up more often if printed for the mass market? And why print them on expensive paper? My guess is that it was a special poster printed for the UK premier or larger (London) West End cinemas.

Thanks, Mark & Rich!

Rich - the people who have told me about the commercial prints have all commented on the inferior quality of the printing.  I have to say, this one looks quite well produced.  Does one of your two sizes correspond exactly with this one ... dimensions and print credit ... ?

Mark - your description of the paper quality tallies with this one - and I would agree - if it had been a piece of commercial merchandise, there surely would have been more around - or at least, more people remembering them.

So far, I'm tending towards the idea that it is some form of original theatrical item - Mark's suggestion of premiere or larger cinemas seems very reasonable.

Thanks again.

Hi, Folks!

My quest for information has become less important as I have almost torn the damn thing in half whilst trying to reverse-roll it to flatten it!

Now is not the time for someone to tell me it's valuable!

Thanks again to everyone for the information.  The consensus of opinion seems to favour this being a commercial poster.

I don't think there would be any more about if it was commercial, as they like cinema posters have only a run of so many printed. I have some sell-through posters from the 70's that were very popular at the time, and I have never seen one surface in over 20 years.
Let's not forget Kubrick withdrew the film after only a short amount of time in the circuits. Anyone got a pressbook? I have the original Brochure, I'll try and find it too see if it has any more info. I do remember that you could buy Posters, Brochure's, etc at the cinema in those days! Lets dig deeper, and I've just put my spade away after Halloween ;)

I am not sure a special poster would feature in a pressbook if it was only intended for premiere or flagship cinema use. As indicated, this poster differs from a normal commercial poster because of the quality of printing and the paper thickness - it is difficult to handle - I mentioned it being brittle Terry because I tore mine as well!

I don't think it is valuable but it is unusual.

I'm going to agree with Paul that it's one of those giant posters that were available (and probably still are) at freshers week sales to stick up in student's digs. I bought a giant Goodfellas 40x60 and a Scarface 40x60 (which I still have) back in '99. There used to be a couple of shops in Manchester that sold these, plus a lot of original bus stop posters.

Hi, Folks!

It's confession time!  I made a very elementary mistake.  Because of the context in which I found this large poster for A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, I made an incorrect assumption about its size.

In fact, it is NOT 60" x 40" - it measures 1400mm x 1000mm - considerably smaller than I thought - and may now be more easily identifiable because of its non-theatrical dimensions.

Apologies for having misled you with my original description.

I discovered this error whilst attempting to repair the tear.

All in all, a chapter of disasters!

Yours red-facedly,

Terry

First up, Hi everybody as this is my first post.

Hehe, did someone mention A Clockwork Orange by any chance ;D.  Yeap I spoke with Terry about this earlier and I must admit that I haven't really seen this poster other than as a cheap reprint at Uni poster fairs (I think I still have mine from back then - can't part with them, they have their own nostalgia in a way!!).

But I have given the poster a good home so with a little TLC, I may display it as I have a space which is exactly 1015mm wide - so it will just fit.

Thanks,

Chris

There is almost unanimous agreement on this and two other forums that this Clockwork Orange poster is a commercial release. However, does anyone know of any other large (60 x 40) commercial film posters from the 1970's being printed on thick card-like paper with sharp text and images? I am now wondering if this was an original style that was subsequently reprinted commercially.
