Things to Come 1936
« on: February 20, 2019, 07:47:01 PM »
Things to Come had its London premiere 83 years ago today on February 20, 1936 (TCM).  I really like the movie, though the beautiful Art Deco movie paper is truly stunning!  It's so cool to me also to think H.G. Wells is credited with the screenplay based on his book,  The Shape of Things to Come, published just three years prior to the film.  Also, the iconic Wells was alive to see the movie and even lived 10 more years! For some reason Wells seeing his film always surprises me even though he was 69 years old when it came out. It just seems so much farther back in time in my mind.  I want to have the beautiful one sheet someday hanging in the living room if the timing and price are right, though this attached pressbook is keeping me very happy right now! If you have movie paper from the film, please share. Here's to world peace Well's style!  Okie

with the strips, it's interesting that Austin Briggs is emulating Raymond, in this period before King Features has him trouble-shooting when Raymond was on vacation, and then when he was ill.

side note: even though Raymond co-created Flash Gordon in 1934 & did the strip continuously through 1943 (Paul Norris does a couple years of the strip before Mac Raboy takes over and does the Sunday page for almost 3 decades), people don't realize there are a half dozen scattered Sunday pages in Sept to Nov 1938 that are unsigned pages. These are by Austin Briggs

Hi Richie,
Also, Austin Briggs is credited in the pressbook by his nickname "Bud" Briggs.  I guess us old comic art collectors would find that most interesting, eh?  Okie

Hi Matias!  Is it the same image as the poster you showed once in a black and white lobby photo in a theatre in Argentina?  Okie

I'd love to have something from the original release of this. That's a great pressbook! The only piece I have is for a 1960's re-release in Mexico with a mish-mash of images that really have nothing to do with the film!

That's funny, MWright!  The bayonet in the soldier's back is pretty intense.  To add to 50s comment, the English translation from the title in Spanish is "The World in War".  Wild! Okie

this english trade advert is on ebay

trade ads from this period were about 22x17 inches (for a double spread) which is a great size imho
the art on the advert above barely covers one of the pages but the greedy dealer is still asking £1500 eyeroll

Be careful. There are some here that don't like "the outing" of ebay listings.  ;)

That is a shocking price being asked, Redman! Lots of crazy asking prices out there.  Okie
