I'm surprised no one has as yet remarked on the title of this thread: What is the rarest poster never found?

the reality is: any poster not yet found and for which no copy is known to exist is just as rare as any other poster not yet found

the correct title might actually be:
what is the best, most desirable or most valuable poster never found

a copy of a poster from 2010 that is known to have been printed, but not known to exist in any collection is just as rare as any poster from 1915 that is not known to exist.

something else.. I'm not sure when 1 sheet posters for THEATRICAL films started being printed.
the earliest THEATRICAL poster I know of (or can think of off the top of my head) is from about 1910

Nickelodeons prior to 1910 or so I don't believe used one sheet sizes. if you look at my http://www.horrorworld.com/ site, on the front page is a pic from 1910. It shows 1 sheets. Prior to that date, I believe "broadsides" were used which are like inserts but list a number of films. I think the only Edison Frankenstein poster known is in this format. As Peter noted, the Lubin Trip to the Moon poster is actually from 1914 and not 1902 as Matt Shapiro would like you to think. One of the reasons for the Nickelodeon not having one sheets is that the longest film until then is maybe 20 minutes except for odd film here and there. In other words, they were all one-reelers and the attraction was less the movie itself than it was "a moving picture".

There have been some for specific movies from 1907. Also, there are undated ones that go back further that are undated, but the movies are from before 1907, and they are first release posters.

There is a stock poster with a printed inset for "Watering the Gardener" from before 1900.

None of them are worth as much as the rare Buehler, and ALL are less desired than even the common Buehler!

I know I have a poster for that Jesus film which name I can't think of, and while teh film is reportedly about 1902, I'm sure the poster is from the 10s or 20s

and that's why I told you back in January that the Buehler poster should be on a par with a London After Midnight US one sheet (should one ever be found).
The Buehler poster is the epoch of movie poster collecting

Susan Pack illustrates several "Potemkin" posters from her and others collections in "Film Posters of the Russian Avant-Garde."  Well worth having, btw.

None of them are worth as much as the rare Buehler...

"Worth" is such a relative term...
