3 Sheet Framing Ideas

I also am thinking of getting an SD frame for a nice 3 sheet.  All you would need i think is a piece of conservation tape and acid free backing board to make it work.  Ive seen the french 1p poster here but no 3 sheets?  Is robert still around to show us some pics?

His site says he can make a 3 sheet frame, but earlier on he wrote that he couldn't get the PETG glazing in that size.  The frame would come without 'glass'.  I don't know if he fixed it.

Years ago, I made a 3 sheet frame using Graphic Dimension rails, a cut down 4'x8' sheet of plexi and a sheet of foam core.  I tried to keep it light, but the frame weighs around 60 pounds.  Placing posters in it is an all day job and hanging it takes 2 people.  The spotlight might be easier since the frame is bolted to the wall, but handling the poster and glazing to get it inserted would definitely be something I wouldn't want to do often.

I am certain he made a comment about about being able to get larger pieces in a thread somewhere.
The frames are definitely light weight. Even the smaller frames 27 x 40's are hard to change. This is why when I change the posters, I take the frame down.

The main thing too would be to have it secured well enough so that it didnt begin to sag downward, over time. That would not be good. But the (removable) conservation tape method and acid free backing board idea is one ive thought about, too, Vick.  :D

But still.. these framed items are HUGE!!!!   faint2.gif

The three sheet frame I built uses a 3 point mounting wire.  I run the wire across about 1/3 of the way down from the top and then triangulate to a third mounting point on the center of the bottom rail.  That keeps the wires under tension and distributes the weight on the bottom rail, keeping it from sagging.

If you use the spotlight frame, you would accomplish the same thing by using multiple screws to secure each rail.  But as said earlier, the real trick is getting that petg/poster sandwich positioned in the snap frame.

And yes, you do need to use something like conservation tape to secure the 2 parts of the 3 sheet.  I did not do that on the last one I mounted and the lower portion has drifted down 1/2 inch in the last three years.

Thanks for the info, jayn_j.

I think this has been clarified but is UV plexi obtainable in a 3sh frame size?

The idea of using 2 pieces isn't all that appealing to me, personally.  :-\

that is weird, you would think that stuff comes in rolls and that he would be able to do 81 inches on demand (he can do 63 I know that)

Definitely a 2 piece overlay is just not an option... (might as well start using saran wrap then!)

It is not the length on the PETG.  It is the width.  It comes on rolls and I think they were 36" wide.  A quick net search shows 4'x8' sheets available these days.

When I built the 3 sheet frame, I cut down a 4'x8' sheet of UV lexan.  Wasn't cheap.  A web search shows a 4x8 sheet in 1/4" thickness running around $380/sheet

Well it must be available at least at 47 inches rather than 36 because he can cut a French 1p

Given that a 3 sheet is 41 inches in length... then the problem seems to be length not width, which is what my wife always says  thumbsup.gif

I'm going to split these 3sh framing/plexi questions off into their own thread, and have it the Framing Board, so this thread be happily about Unicorns. And others can chime in, with their framing thoughts, too, if wanted.   :)

A 3 sheet is 41" in width (not length). Sorry to hear your wife is suffering from unsatisfactory length

I meant length of its width!

I had a 3 sheet hung in about the same position in my Colorado home.  It took 3 people several hours and required a 17' Little Giant ladder and a 6' one underneath.

Sounds like the hang and install was quite the job there, jayn.

Do you recall what the total weight of the frame was?

60-70 pounds.  I tried to keep it lightweight, but it adds up fast.  I used a pair of 150 pound hangers, nailed into studs.  In retrospect, I should have used 8 penny framing nails as a lot of the time was spent trying to get the wire into the hanger while holding the frame and balancing on the ladder.

Yes, Robert can do a 3-sheet plexi cut in one piece - I know as I have one hanging at the house.

I got this note from Robert (of Spotlight), over the weekend, re the plexi (overlay) sizes he can offer:

"We can make any size frame. And the biggest overlay we can supply is 48" X 96" so we can do the 3 sheet with one whole overlay.

6 sheets we need to use two which then there is a seam."
