Emovie or Heritage or ??...and what do i do?
« on: September 14, 2015, 03:50:25 AM »
My stars... So it has come to this. Eeek!  I'm broke and now temporarily out on disability for a while as I recover from my recent knee surgery. I am big time short of cash-o-rama. Although I do not have access to all of my posters, I can access a lot of them...and intend to go through them and part with some. Nothing any of you would be interested in for the most part, but I know I have a lot of excess I can trim.  But what i need to know is do you recommend going through emovieposter, heritage, or do-it-yourself ebay?  And why? And HOW??

Is this even the right place to ask this question?

I need to get my ol' weary butt to bed.

THANKS!

CHEERS!

What pieces are you thinking of selling?

You certainly would not go wrong with EMP.

Or if you have higher end material, then HA could also be the place to go.

Have you assembled a list (or potential list) of items heading to the auction block?

And if u want to keep the majority of the $$ for yourself, then ebay would be the way to roll, tho u do it all.. listing, packaging and shipping.

sounds like you need $ now, so neither EMP or HA.
List here to start with, and/or ebay.

Agree with Ari.  By the time they get cataloged, photographed, put in an auction, etc... it will likely be 3-6 months minimum before you see a check.

Craigslist will allow you to keep all your $, though your market is certainly more limited, unless you're in a metropolis area.

An ad here would be good to as you know the right people will be reading it.

Can't comment on the time it takes EMP or HA, but I imagine it's lengthy.  Commissions are high, but they do all the dirty work.

eBay will be quicker too, but know that you'll lose out on a % (10% final value fees, 2.9% + .30 for PayPal, shipping) not to mention a buyer can dispute a sale/get a refund for a lengthy period of time.

If it was me, I'd start w/ the first two, in additional to simultaneously listing eBay auctions (BIN, immediate pay thru PayPal).  That way you can pull the ad off CL or off eBay depending on which sells first.

With ebay, if you've never sold anything, i think you dont "automatically" get your cash until you make 25 sales.  Please correct me if I'm wrong - they hold your money for 6 weeks following each transaction until the 26th one.

by the way MAGG hope you feel better...now might be the time to get familiar with Seinfeld... :)

+1 Ari list them here, you are in the right place and good company. Just be sure to obey the selling rules/post per day or somebody will get you!

Also when you sell on Ebay, they hold the funds for so long if you haven't made a certain amount of sales, with perfect feedback, and or a dollar amount. Plus all the fees hepcatpunk already mentioned. However you can move items faster.

I have never dealt with EMP to sell an item. I could say with good reason it would take a while to get paid based on the time to sort and list.

You said none of us would be interested, this is true if we don't know what you are getting rid of......

If cash is wanted ASAP, then as Ari first said, listing here on the forum, too, would be a quick (and easy) way to get your stuff out there, visible and listed.

Good morning. (UGh!  The fan must have been blowing in my face last night. I am all congested and miserable...)

Thanks for all of your help. I haven't even begun to dig through the boxes and sort out stuff as I just decided last night to down-size my stuff. I found a bunch of stuff that wasn't even in a box--just in a pile under my bed--the other day, junk none of you would want. I don't remember how or why it got there, but clearly even then I was thinking of getting rid of it. That would probably be an eBay pile..

I don't know what I'll end up pulling to sell--but it really won't be anything fabulous. I'm down but I'm not out...and I'm not giving up my treasured pieces. I'm not that desperate. Besides, I do have a house I will be putting on the market any day now. That will help me out immensely (well, if it sells. Ha!).

But I do need to get rid of stuff. I have a ton o' stuff (not just movie posters and other movie stuff) to get rid of. I'll be doing eBay (waaagh) for sure, but hope to jump on emovie and/or heritage's bandwagon as well (just so they can do it right--photos, description, grading, etc.)

But HOW do I go about doing that? Do I just pack up some posters and send them off? I'm dreading this, but need to do something...

CHEERS and THANK YOU for all of your help!

Hey Shawn,

Both HA and EMP have pages on their sites, explaining the consignment process, how to mail items to them, etc.

EMP: http://www.emovieposter.com/learnmore/?page=consign

HA: http://movieposters.ha.com/how-to-sell-my-collection.s?ic=Tab-ToSell-040814

how badly & how fast you need money is a question. do you need money in the next 30 days?
if so, no auctioneer can do that for you. It takes time to get material in and processed and of course, there are fees and you have to accept whatever price your poster gets on that day.

my first suggestion for those needing FAST cash is eBay
if you create 7 day auctions, you get paid and have your money within 14 days in general and they also have 1-3 and 5 day auctions

also of course, list posters here

my own experience with other auctions tells me that unless I have something very valuable that Heritage could sell in a Signature Auction, is that they can't help me when it's needed very fast

one auction I sent 500 items to once and it was 5 months before they opened my package <<< clearly that was neither appropriate nor sufficient.
If they hadn't send my remaining material back in 2010, I think I would still be getting $26 checks as they sold 5 items a month for the rest of my life

selling by auctions can be a time consuming issue and if you need the money fast, selling them by yourself is the best option

if you need a primer on packaging - here is a primer for shipping folded items
http://www.movieposterbid.com/packing_tutorial/

be sure to have good cardboard and not used crap. Priority Mail boxes are free at your post office, you need size #1095 and if the post office does not have them out, you can order them online for free

Rich, you still take consignments, too, right?

http://www.movieposterbid.com/index.php?option=com_rsform&view=rsform&formId=3&Itemid=119

of course I do, but I'm limiting them to certain kinds of material (by value) and I couldn't offer him better than 60 days to first auction because I'm only doing 6-8 auctions a year
I'm in the middle of prepping a rolled poster auction that starts next week, so if he wanted to ship some great rolled posters very fast, I could handle those, but my next auction isn't for another 8 weeks or so and I'm not sure that's what he's needing

I think if he needs fast fast fast cash, ebay is the way to go. Just list some stuff for set sale first - not auction and see if his prices will engender purchases
but it really depends on how fast he needs money. If he doesn't need cash for 90 days or more, he can open his options to include other auctions, but if he needs $$$ this month, ebay is his very best option

5 months is a heck of a long time Rich. Enough to put me off, I guess they get a lot of material on a daily basis. But still...

And thank you for sharing that packing tutorial. I still have the tube (and poster ) you sent me. Your packaging was first class, wish other people could do the same.

thanks Rosa.. the 5 months thing was only the first of several mistakes within that one consignment. But it was of course, part of a whole 'nother even more ridiculous picture

and the packaging.. if you can't do that well, give it up before you start.

not many weeks back on a facebook group for silkscreen posters, there were regular complaints about people's packages.

one fool sent a poster tightly rolled in a 3 inch wide tube with no packing materials, and didn't even tape the ends on. The tube was crushed & the caps pushed into the tube, damaging the poster. Of course, both the buyer and seller complained it was the USPS fault, but that was total bs - it was the seller's fault. I posted a whole tutorial for them and not only did it not change their minds, I was flamed for starting trouble. The seller defending his packaging practices were hilarious - but the others were just too stupid to see it. I unjoined that group..

ps: I sure hope the poster is framed & displayed

Hi there. I didn't even consider movieposterbid.com as I know he is consolidating his warehouse and doing very few auctions a year now.

Still, I didn't even consider the other two auction houses would take MONTHS to get results from. Blah!

I'm still digging. I may just bundle a bunch off to one or the other auction houses anyway. AND i'll have to jump on eBay. My last regular check will come Thursday. Disability (which will only be a fraction of my regular wages) has a week's grace period (that ends this Friday) before it starts...and it will run for 2 weeks before I get a check processed...which puts another check at least 3 weeks out (and less than a normal check). In the mean time, I have a wedding to go to this coming weekend and my ill-planned trip to Hawaii 2 weeks later. It's gonna be a bargain basement trip. Oh my stars! (Oh well, I am going at the request of friends. I paid for the tickets weeks ago and they are paying for the accommodations. But there will be no tacky tourist fun on this trip...waaaagh!) Hopefully the real estate gods will smile on me and sell my house ASAP!  :-)

CHEERS and thank you all for the help.

"Flush"? I'm strapped so tight... EEEK! It is crazy to think I'm heading for Maui soon without a cent to my name. Poorest tourist ever. Ha! if only I could postpone it all some how... Oh well. I know I must sound so completely unsympathetic with that trip--ha! But really, I am broke, broke, BROKE! Actually, being this broke will make the trip more interesting (maybe).

Of course, I was beyond broke on my recent New Orleans trip (spent all of my money on posters beforehand. Ha!). How did I pay for that? That is quite an amazing story--which I can share if you'd like (it's already written out as an email to friends. I can just cut/paste and add in the photos if you really want to know). Or NOT! My stars, I do seem to travel by the seat of my pants---but this time, there is NO HOPE that what I miraculously did in New Orleans will happen in Maui. I literally will be at the mercy of the group of friends I'm going with. Jinkies.

I'm not worried about the wedding this weekend so much. I've got that covered (another friend, who is also currently on the poor side, wants to go in halvsies on the gift and the wedding party actually asked today if I would be their photographer! Ha! Last minute and I am NO photographer. They offered to pay me--but I said it would be part of their gift). My sister (who I have not seen since her wedding in 2012 or 2013) also just informed me I'm going to be an uncle and she's having a baby shower just before Maui (on the 23rd?). Swell. There's MORE $$ I need to cough up. What the heck am I going to do? I'll get the house listed this week---and just sell as much as I can on ebay i guess before everything collapses.

Ha!  Here I am publicly having a financial meltdown... Ha ha ha! I find it amusing. Things will turn around eventually... But in the meantime I get to panic!  Ha! Thanks for being there...lol!

CHEERS!
