How to Help Date Japanese Posters - Post 1965

From Armin's website and I think it would be good to have this info here, too, as a general reference tool, using the Eirin number, whch was introduced in 1965.

I inquired with Armin about JP RR posters that might use the same artwork (and therefore be difficult to distinguish from a first release poster).

He wrote me back and said that re-release posters have (are given) a new Eirin number to reflect the re-release year.

There were some and exceptions and a few cases where Eirin numbers were mixed up when the posters were printed and the RR poster had the same number as the first release. The poster for BULLITT is one example.

I am aware of three rereleases that have the same Eirin number as the first release: BULLIT, YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE and ROSEMARY'S BABY.
They can be easily detected though. BULLIT RR has the Oscar statue, YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE RR has completely different artwork and ROSEMARY'S BABY RR has a CIC logo.

Regarding EASY RIDER: The film was released three times theatrically in Japan (1970, 1972 and 1995). Not sure if the same Eirin number was used. But as you can see from the very small number of known "screw ups" above, chances are that the Eirin number was updated.

and when you have a poster with no Erin mark, that's either a reprint or one of those posters you could buy at the theatre which aside from the Erin mark is exactly the same as the theatrical version, such as Star Wars, right?

The posters one could (and in some cases still can) buy at the box office are the official movie posters, with Eirin mark.
Sometimes distributors would print special give away posters without Eirin mark, but I have only seen a handful of those.
There aren't many reprints in Japan. The ones that are dangerous are the Toho and Daiei kaiju movies because they are official reprints by the studios themselves, and unless you know what you are looking for, it can be difficult to spot them.
But bear in mind that not all offical posters have Eirin marks. Very limited releases often do not, for example arthouse movies or the 2007 rerelease of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE.

Hi Armin,

I just went to look at your site and it looks to be down? When i tried to log onto http://www.posteroid.com, I was sent to this URL, instead: http://posteroid.com/cgi-sys/suspendedpage.cgi

Is your site url still the same? Or did something change?

Cheers.

LAMP also has a page that helps explain the Eirin mark and how it dates a JP poster (also provided to them by Armin)  :) :

I decided to close posteroid.com as I lack the time to do quality updates. With a baby at home and a lot of work to do, I just have to set priorities.
But my book on Japanese cult movie posters will be published soon and I continue collecting Japanese smut so I am not retiring.
