List of Portal Publications reprints from the 60s/70s...
« on: July 23, 2010, 05:17:21 PM »
Does anyone have a definitive list of Portal Publications reprints from the 60s & 70s?  I come across these quite often when searching for old posters.  A few ways to tell they are reprints is:

A) The size is off… they are usually reprints of 1-sheets (accept the Wizard of Oz 1/2 sheets) which should be 27”x41”.  Instead the Portal reprints are usually roughly 20”x30”.
B) They usually say “Portal  Publications, Sausalito, Calf. 94965.”  Zipcodes weren’t used until 1963 so clearly these were printed after this time.

I can start with a few I've seen on eBay or elsewhere...

Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
African Queen, The (1950) 20” x 28”
Dracula (1931) 21" x 29"
Frankenstein (1931) 21" x 29"
Gay Divorcee, The (1934) 20" x 28"
Gone with the Wind (1939)
King Kong (1933) 21" x 29"
Little Colonel, The (1936) 19” x 29”
March of the Wooden Soldier (1934)
Morocco (1930)
My Little Chickadee (1940) 20” x 28”
Thief of Bagdad, The (1924)
Wizard of Oz, The (1939) Style A 20” x 28”
Wizard of Oz, The (1939) Style B 20” x 28”

Watch out, the last two can be tricky as they are so close to the size of an original half sheet.

Hey, Harry.  There is also a THIEF OF BAGDAD (1924 Douglas Fairbanks winged horse version) poster in this Portal series. I believe there might also be one each for the 1938 ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD and the 1934 MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS.

Thanks Brude.  I modified the list above to include those three.  I envisioned this as a list I could update over time.  However, I just remembered that I can only edit my posts for a few hours before they are locked.  :(

True, but you can copy the original, add to it or modify it, and then delete the original. At least I think you can!

I was looking for another thread where we mentioned Portal posters, but this will do. I must of missed this one, it does give Harry a chance to update though, as he also missed off the 1934 Black Cat, and the 1932 Mummy.

Anyway on the thread I was looking for, I said I had a Creature from the Black lagoon Portal poster, I couldn't find. Well...

So that make's three to add to the list Harry.  :)

I'm sure there was also the 1933 Invisible Man, but don't quote me on that one.

Was this thread started because someone bought a Repro thinking it was a genuine poster?? or was it Mel's Casablanca 1/2 sheet query?

Speaking of Portal Publications, I have this 20x28 from 1986.  I thought they had thrown in the towel by the 80s, but I guess I was wrong...

Here's another to add to this list.

The Maltese Falcon

"Published and Distributed by Portal Publications, Ltd" on the lower left border and "M067 LITHO IN USA" on the lower right.

Another Portal title to add to the list. This one for the 1917 William Fox movie, The Babes in the Woods. It measures in at 21x29 inches.

The Gone of the Wind is the one I found tricky, with the added complication that there seems to be a lot of these posters around... so I never quite sure if it is the real thing.

If they are like the other Portals usually seen, the company will have the placed the Portal Publications name on the lower left border and the large year of release in the lower right (ie 1939)... (and the dimensions, too, if it was made smaller than the original).

It seems that this was their typical way of printing this info on the lower border of all their posters.   ;)

Another to add to the list is Charlie Chaplin in The Adventurer. It measures 19.5"x29" and has the normal markings like other Portal Publications posters in the bottom left corner and in the right corner reads 1917 Litho USA.

And another
The Sainted Devil featuring Rudolph Valentino- Bottom left reads the normal Portal Publication as usual and the bottom right reads 1924 Litho USA

And another
Every day's a Holiday featuring Mae West(19.25"x29")- Bottom left normal Portal Publications and bottom right 1938 Litho USA

I get calls all the time from people with these who think they have won the lottery, and often the bottom has been trimmed off, so the explanation about zip codes doesn't help. But I start out asking the measurements, and if they say anything around 20 x 28, I then ask if it is taller than it is wide, and if it is entirely in English, and if they answer yes and yes, then I tell them they have a repro. It saves a lot of time and sending photos.

Another for the list.. (and currently on ebay, listed in the "originals" section); the seller gives no dimensions (but one can see it is undersized) and the roll of tape sits conveniently over the Portal name on the lower left.

Part of the Sausalito name can be read, tho ;)  as well as the telltale, bold year (1936) printed on the lower right border.

Tarzan and the Leopard Woman (1936)

And, further to a discussion on the Bond thread in Genres, there is a For Your Eyes Only poster from Portal.

This just to close the circle if anyone is still looking to create the definitive list.

Besides movie posters, I am pretty sure Portal also made reproductions of travel/propaganda/advertising posters too.

Portal was founded in 1954 and did/does all kinds of graphic work, including items like calendars
