And the next acquisition isn't a movie poster, but I can't resist sharing it here anyway.  The Mexican artist Arias Bernal designed some great movie posters in the '40s, and I've shared a few photos before including "Fantasia Ranchera" and "Romeo y Julieta".

He was also a noted caricaturist and political cartoonist, and produced propaganda posters during WWII.

Near the end of the war, he produced an album of lithographs with artwork for a full set of playing cards, with each card having unique caricature artwork relating to the war.

And the complete album arrived on my doorstep today!  I'll share just a few examples here. Perhaps I'll post more in a different thread. I guess there isn't a dedicated propaganda section but I'll find a place.

These are super cool.  What size are they?

Those Bernal cards are absolutely amazing, Deke.
I'm going to chime in with those who want more info.
 cheers

Nice to see so much interest in the playing card prints!

To answer a couple of the questions:
  • Each print is 29cm x 39cm
  • Each print is single-sided (reverse is blank)
  • Printed in Mexico City by "Carral y Carral" (Presumably 1945 or 46?)
I am not sure if decks of actual playing cards were produced with this artwork, or if it was solely sold as an album of prints.  I haven't ever seen any real playing cards.

I have uploaded images of the full album to photobucket. Enjoy!
http://s779.photobucket.com/user/DekeThornton/slideshow/Bernal%20WWII%20Playing%20Cards

Most of the historical figures are probably pretty recognizable. Hitler, Stalin, Churchill, Roosevelt, Hirohito, Montgomery, Himmler, Goering, etc.  But the inside cover also has a handy legend with descriptions for all of the cards.  I am not sure the text is quite legible in the photos though. I blame the photobucket compression :/

Somewhat interestingly, the cover of the album is in Spanish but the descriptive text on the inside cover is in English.  I wonder if perhaps separate versions of the inside cover were printed for Spanish & English-speaking markets.

One more interesting point is that my particular copy has a gift inscription in pen on the inside cover: "To Wayne and Bill. A folio of historic fun. For your game room -- in Texas. From Francis and Red 6-14-1947"

Anyway, on to the good stuff. Here are a few more photos of my favorites.

Petain and the capitulation of France; Roosevelt ("America, Fuck Yeah" from Team America: World Police starts playing in my head involuntarily when I look at this print):

Death of Hindenburg; Hitler and Himmler begin book burning and executions:

Casablanca Conference; Hitler is thwarted by the Russian bear:

Ok I know it's not movie posters but those playing cards fascinated me so i did a little research.  500 decks were privately made in the early 2000's.  There is also a nice book that was published twice...once in 2002 and once in 2014 that has scans of all the cards and commentary on them.  Here is a link to the book on Amazon that you can get if you want.  It's also available used on some other sites as well.

http://www.amazon.com/Fuehrer-Face-Cards-Captions-Illustrated/dp/1502348519/ref=la_B00JAG9SWQ_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1433354195&sr=1-3

You can peek inside the book and also go to the back cover to see encapsulated information that will put this thing to bed  ;D

You do manage to lick up your UK posters early...!

I am still nowhere near picking up a SPECTRE quad yet (for a reasonable price)

Cheers.

I think Paul is teasing us with these new posters and holding back the golden oldie rarities he is known for.
Probably doing it for effect...

Quit toying with us Waines!

So far the only quads I have seen are the ones that were used at the SW convention in the UK. There are a couple of sellers that have been printing a quad size which seem to come and go.

Interesting twist on yours, it does not say December and instead says "In Cinemas Soon". Wonder if it was changed for some reason or there is another printing for another purpose. Is yours a US one sheet? Is it double sided?

had my eye on this one for several years so cheers to whoever started the thread a few wks back re: HA's make an offer...

in this case, it worked out well - one offer, same day acceptance, poster in hand 10 days later.  amazing how quickly a poster can become yours when offering 2x what the prev buyer paid for it!

Congrats and double the money usually will get results. You may want to put this one in the scariest thread as well if it is not there already.

The below text is from the auction house. Basically this was a test proof for the artwork before moving on to the next stage in the process, adding the title and text. This would technically be considered an art or artists proof depending on who you talk to. The one on the left is obviously a finished Hungarian Jedi poster.

"From Helenyi, Tibor's estate. 1984. Printers test proof for Tibor Helenyi's famous poster for Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, to check the final result of the graphics in a printed version."

Matt, I actually did the layout for the framing I wanted to use for them after I received confirmation on the win so was ready to go when they came, just needed to cut the mat to the right size and I was done. Can't wait to see yours when they arrive.

It is a roughly 1:1 uncropped copy of the original artwork with some color modification. It is overall darker than the original art.
