I remember when (1980's) I could go to a music (CD) rental store. The owner would provide recommendations. But it only lasted a year. Those renters presumably went on to buy the music instead and now download / stream it.

yep. there used to be people who listened to the stuff and knew what people liked. There was also a listening station at each row of records or cds that had 6 diff discs ready for listening to with headphones. You can still listen before you buy, but yeah.. it was a different experience

there was an independent video store the next town over when i was a kid that i loved hanging out at. i'd sit around one of the tvs and watch a full movie, refusing to leave... drove my mom crazy. they had a really impressive eclectic collection from what i remember too, especially for a small town. i miss it.

was in a SMALL country town a few weeks ago (Williams), halfway between Albany and Perth on the HWY.
AND THEY HAD A VIDEO RENTAL SRORE. (I mean VHS not DVD)
The tapes looked like they had not been rented for a decade.
I asked if she would sell and she said yes, but the condition was not anywhere near good enough to be worthwhile.
