Vegetable/Fruit Crate Labels
« on: April 16, 2015, 02:20:13 PM »
I dont collect these, per se, but came across this label, already framed at matted in simple black frame and white mat, for a whole $6.50 USD, at a local shop.. the money going for various local women's help groups. All of their art was marked 75% off.. so i thought why not. This one is from the early-mid 1940s.

Advertising art has always been something I've enjoyed looking at online and from what I have read, there is quite a hobby for those that collect these crate labels as well.

(This is hanging in my kitchen-- the subject matter was right)

Yeah, those are cool pieces of history.  Various companies from that era had some great designs for the labeling, marketing, etc. of their products.  Poster Mountain has worked on some that are nice.

Good score.  cool1

Thanks, and so true, Brandon.

I've seen some appraisals in ARoadshow over the years.. Rudy Franchi was the appraiser. He made mention, that like any other kinds of this kind of material, the flashier, the more interesting, or more colorful the imagery, the more collectible it can potentially be.

Always amazed at how any of these kinds of items, that were meant for nothing more than to advertise a company and product, catch one's eye and become the next hobby to gather and collect in.

Thanks all.

The piece is rather small, measuring approx 7x9 inches.

The frame is about 12.5 x 17".. so it suited and filled a spot on the kitchen wall nicely.

Sorry to hear about your mail loss, Steve.  :'(

It is just those images, like the one u purchased (animals or birds alongside vibrant fruit or vegetable art), that seem to be collected (or prized) the most by many collectors.

I can't remember as a while ago maybe 8 years, I guess I made a claim as I rarely lose track of something expected in the mail, mostly just remember being dissapointed, think I got a refund.

Found this today, at my little 2nd hand shop.

Another produce label, this for California melons. It's from 1940, and was already matted and framed.

For LEVON California Melons. The label measures 9 x 11.5 inches. The lion art could be the same kind used on circus posters.

Great art on "Helm" the lion, Jeff!  "The Weight" of those melons are perfect for Chester and Annie to take to the carnival, eh?   Okie
