Thanks, Rosa! I'm glad you found it helpful.

I'll continue to post as I dive into the world of movie art/poster books.

Not strictly a poster book, but definitely related is The Art of Selling Movies by John McElwee. It's mostly newspaper ads for old films, but it's still pretty great to see some of this rare stuff.

Also, I wonder if anyone has had a chance to take a peek at Movie Poster Artists: United States and Canada by Eric and Susan Poole. It's a book on 240 movie poster artists and apparently has over 2700 poster images.

Jamie, do you know if the authors are the son and wife of LAMP founder, Ed Poole?

Hey Jeff,

I don't know about the authors' exact relation to Ed Poole, but the association with LAMP is spot-on, so you're very likely correct.

Im guessing that his son's name is Eric, but do know that his wife's name is Susan. But would seem to make sense that this book is a family affair of the LAMP folks.

I'd love to check their book out. Sounds like it's full of a lot of good info and pics.

I just bought it after reading about it.  Will let you know what I think when I get it.

I wrote to Ed from LAMP and just got a reply. Here's what he wrote me:

Hi Jeff,

Yes it is by us.... No it is not by someone named Eric. We have a full color edition and a black and white edition. Here they are on Amazon:

Thank you Jamie. I didn't know anything about the Movie Poster Artists book but have ordered one as well. It seems that there are colour and b/w editions.

I got the Poole's book a couple days ago. It is well worth the money in my opinion.

Dale,
did you get the b & w or the pricier color version? If the latter, how's the printing?

Color, the picture aspect is not the greatest as the images in general tend to be about business card size, but I think they probably kept in mind the cost as really it is more informational than a coffee table book (at least in my eye).

Yes, I would agree. I've had my copy a long while but it remains among the best of its kind to this day. Apart from the gobsmacking array of posters printed to a very high quality, the individual contributions (particularly Ray Bradbury and Harlan Ellison) are also great reminders of what cinema-going was like back in the great old days of Hollywood.

Sure thing, Chris. The book cover art choice alone is worth snagging a copy... notworthy.gif  (I think the Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932) OS art is superb, and I'd love to own a copy, so I guess I'm a bit biased).

Agreed, Jeff. Love the cover and that image in general. The book is actually on it's way to me now.

I ordered it and Too Much Horror Business, Kirk Hammett's book on his horror collection, which I believe includes a impressive poster collection.

On vacation at the moment, so I'm hoping they come in soon to help me kill the time!

I dont have Hammett's book yet but from all that has been written about it, in general and here on the forum, I think it's another that will make any fan of horror's mouth water. He's got some true, rare gems in his collection, too.

Graven Images came in today, Jeff. I took a gamble on a used copy off of Amazon and lucked out, it's immaculate. Can't wait to dive in.

The Hammet book should be in soon as well, I'll shoot some pics when I get a second. Incidentally a new book of his collection will be out soon in coordination with his exhibit at the Peabody Museum in Salem, Mass. which starts in August. Plan on taking a trip to check it out.

Good to hear you got a good copy via Amazon, Chris, as I'm quite sure that the book is long out of print.

An updated version of the 2009 book, "Reynold Brown: A Life in Pictures" by Dan Zimmer will be shipping in September. With an added 80 pages, it looks to be quite nice with many new, added pictures and text.

Pre order and preview info can be found here:

Interesting, Jeff.  I wonder what those 80 additional pages will cover.  I already have this book but I might have to double-dip and buy this new copy if the new material is worth it.

Thanks for the note on the Brown book, Jeff. Been wanting this for a while, but wasn't ready to fork over the $200+ most are asking for it!
