That is a great idea... I would hold Peter's site up as the gold standard in that regard.  Reading through his site you can tell how much he values and appreciates each and every poster!

I would too. The man loves (and knows) his paper  clap

Right now I'm driven to have a substantial 30s-40s US collection and film noir collection

Noirs suck - why would you EVER want those?!

Good news:  I refinanced my car and paid off every scrap of debt I owe for posters, paid my $3300 car repair bill, fixed/upgraded all the stuff I've been neglecting around my apt, fixed my bikes, etc.  So I'm completely debt free other than a monthly car payment.

Bad news: I blew $2700 of the refinancing to buy more posters, which I was going to spend on a vacation to Costa Rica.  Now I get to sit at home amidst my stacks of pretty paper.

Such is the life of a poster 'ho.

One way to end collecting - going to jail....

NY church clerk who stole $1 million gets up to 9 years prison

A 67-year-old woman was sentenced to up to nine years in prison for embezzling more than $1 million from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, much of it spent on expensive dolls, prosecutors said on Thursday.

In the years she worked as the church accounts payable clerk, Anita Collins stole $1,073,000 by writing 450 checks to herself and making them look like payments to vendors, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. said.....

Investigators scoured Collins' modest home in the Bronx borough and found an enormous collection of dolls, some from the Madame Alexander catalog, which sells a Rhett Butler doll for $449.95 and a Moulin Rouge doll for $749.95.

"There were 28 boxes of items taken from the home, about 20 of which were full of assorted dolls," a spokesman for the district attorney's office said.

In other cases where defendants are ordered to pay back the victim, he said, seized items are sold at auction or returned to the victim to help fulfill the restitution order.

Well despite my short tenure on this board, I feel I have some applicable input for this discussion.

Some people just have psychologically addictive personalities. Some have it by way of entrepreneurship; others have it in the need to play video games all day every day; and some have it in collecting stamps, coins, poster, et al. In some individuals this proclivity wrecks lives, but in others it brings immense personal happiness. Some people are naturally good at, or naturally quick to develop, self-control and self-regulation. But those people are the minority. If they were the majority, so many men and women wouldn't go broke in casinos. Knowing your limits, and knowing when to stop separates a healthy addiction from an unhealthy one.

Here is a pleasant way of viewing all of the hours lost, and money spent, in a hobby --- "What else would you have done? Where else would you have spent it?" Any money you lost wasn't truly a loss... It was a purchase of entertainment. When I purchase a 300page book for $20, what am I buying? Answer: The ~10hours it will take me to read it, the knowledge it gives me, the feeling of accomplishment when I finish, opening new pathways of thought, something to discuss with others, and a new mantle piece. I think you can use the same logic to posters. Even though in the long run, you may have sank too much perceived time and money, what you really did was *buy* an incredible amount of entertainment, purpose, and belonging.

You can only become knowledgeable in a field by sinking a tremendous amount of hours into it. And that knowledge isn't worthless. Would you really be any better off if you had, instead, spent 12 hours watching football every week like most Americans? Not that football is bad, or good. It's merely entertainment. But so is poster-collecting.  ;D

If its something that I see cheap starting bid and I think I could make a buck out of it, that's how I bid, if I get it's cool, f of I don't care. If its something for me, which is very very rare these days, I would snipe.

I response to T's initial question, many great and interesting POV's in this thread including FightClub12's which says it all well.

I dont think collecting ever truly ends, either. As someone else said, maybe collecting one one area of interest will fade or cool off, but then another is stoked and begins, especially when one has 'the collector bug.'

Ive always collected things..as a kid, it was old coins and ordering world currency thru the mail (Littleton & Co, I think the name was). I still have an envelope at my parents house, full of world coins, bank notes, in the original packaging. Then I got into Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, when i saw a copy on a news stand. And as soon as I saw that back issues were available, I began saving my $ to be able to collect as many of those earlier issues as I could. (And that continues to this day, trying to find some of the earliest issues at a decent price. The iternet has helped in that regard.

And of course, movie posters. The artwork, design and films they are made for all are appealing and why we all collect those.

So will it ever end for me? I dont know. Tho i think i pick and choose with some care and dont go overboard. And that slow (yet steady) pace keeps this (or any) collecting I do, fresh and exciting.

I finished blowing investing spending my Round 1 poster dough last month, so now have to switch from an insane spending rate of $450 DAILY to $300 month. So collecting will not "end" but will resume some semblance of normality.

(Not bragging just a crazy story you can convey when your sig other complains about YOUR eminently reasonable MP spending!)

*****

So I've replaced my MP obsession with an obsession with "the business side" of the film industry. I read The Hollywood Reporter and Variety daily. Some fascinating (IMO) tidbits I've picked up:

- George Lucas in 1977 brilliantly "bought" the SW toy rights from Fox by foregoing a $500,000 directing fee. The toy money vastly surpassed the ticket sales. Last year, for example $1 billion of SW toys were sold. In 1978 Fox fired its chairman for selling the toy rights. Demand was so overwhelming that Kenner sold "certificates" as Christmas gifts:

*****

- Robert Redford was a relatively-unknown actor before BC&TSK. He only got the TSK role after Steve McQueen dropped out solely bc the studio wouldn't give him top billing over Paul Newman. The studio chief initially opposed hiring RR. RR became a mega-star as soon as the film was released.

*****

- Before the event, the Woodstock organizers sold the film rights for $15,000 to Warner, which spent $600K on the film. It earned $50 million (now $327 million). The organizers lost money on the event itself.

*****

- The director of Justice League happened to see a Benz concept car in a video game. MB agreed to build a working model of the car to use in the film:

*****

- How the industry has/will handle sexual harassment in the wake of the HW debacle. It's already fired two execs for comparatively minor SH:

What did you buy for $450 daily and how did you come up with $300 monthly?  It's so precise.  Most importantly, how do you plan on going from one to the other?

So is the plan to sell some, like you're selling Breakfast at Tiffany's right now, replenish your coffers, buy more, sell more, and keep rotating the collection until you eventually own pieces you would never sell and call it a day?

I know you don't understand collecting and not displaying, but I don't understand the mad buying rush and the complete stop once it ends.

"mad" maybe but the gameplan was to recover most of the best MPs from Round 1. 85% of my pre-1990 MPs are repeats:

https://www.facebook.com/pg/MoviePosterCollectors/photos/?tab=album&album_id=2003153676635232

I also recovered some of the best R1 moderns, and I had to look far and wide for some:

*****

Not sure what I'll do with the BAT proceeds. I am so friggin' tired of hot femme MPs! I'd love to get some classic sci-fi:

*****

Displaying? I just really like living in an art gallery. But I've finally found 2 collectors who are even crazier than me:

*****

I better understand your displaying quandary. BH said he once talked to a famous movie star, who told him "Why would I collect/display MPs, even from my own films? My friends don't!" So MPs are just not seen as appropos wall fodder, even in LA. But everybody wants to display modern fine art, terrible IMO:
