hehe, great movie. I have a particular interest in Miike posters, and have 45 different Miike chirashi posters in stock ... but I've never seen one for Gozu, one of his (many) standout films.

Given that it's a fairly recent release, I wonder if it even got a theatrical. As there would almost always be a chirashi released if so.

Still, I'd love to be proved wrong on that!

thats very interesting!
curious it would get a UK release all be it with a terrible poster! i find it strange this wouldnt get a theatrical release in japan as, to me it looks like one of his best movies?
i could understand visitor Q not getting a cinema release as it shot on video. but gozu looks beautiful!!!!right up there with his section of 3 extremes.

ok well you answered my question, and i now believe there to be no such thing as a gozu B2. sad day but i'll get over it :)

Hey I'm only saying that I haven't seen it - not that it doesn't exist. You never know!

Although imdb lists its first release date in Japan as a "DVD premiere". I see it also opened the 25th Pia Film Festival the day after the DVD release, so it did have at least a brief theatrical run in Japan.

As to the irony of a poster being released in the UK and not Japan, perhaps it's that Miike was perceived as "Weird and exotic" to us westerners, but in Japan, as merely "weird"  ;D

Sorry, just saw this now.
GOZU did not have a cinema release in Japan, it went straight to video, so there is unfortunately no poster.
Interestingly, VISITOR Q did have a very limited Japanese cinema release in 2001 (I own the B2 poster). Most of Miike's early films only had extremely limited cinema releases (if at all). "Extremely limited" means like less than ten small art theatres in all of Japan.

thanks armin.thats appreciated!
i knew you would know :)
i find it really odd that his best looking movie never got a cinema release in japan. and yet visitor q which looks like it was shot on a mobile phone did!!!
what an odd world.
now my mind has been put to rest and i know i dont need a poster for gozu. as the 3 i have seen i dont like much at all and certainly not enough to fork out any kind of money for.

Miike's early movies made their money on video. The cinema releases were to avoid the "direct-to-video" low budget stigma but only a few of his films from the 90's and early 00's got that special treatment. And when they were released, then only in a couple of very small cinemas in the large cities like Tokyo and Osaka.
Here the poster for VISITOR Q by the way:

Such an odd film maker, in that his movies are more hit and miss than anyone.

With 92 films to his credit so far, he is bound to have a few crappy ones in his portfolio.
Now if you compare that with Tarantino .....

completely agreed!
but he has made a REALLY wide selection of movies too and not just one genre. and in most things hes dipped his toe he has succeeded in!
oddly his most popular movie i really dont like at all, ichi the killer i think chronic!
i much prefer full metal yakuza or fudoh to ichi.
strange that he was SO prolific then it just kind of trailed off over the last few years, wonder why that is?
i seem to have skipped over his last few movies.

When Miike started he was an unknown filmmaker who took any project he could and changed the scripts in a way that suited him. The films went straight to video and as long as there was enough action and violence in them, they made their money back. Now he is among Japan's top directors and works with high budgets. I reckon he must have a lot of money people breathing down his neck and it shows.

Have been on the lookout for this one myself, as well as any other Miike.  Just picked up these recent outings from him, Hara Kiri B1 set and 13 Assassins B2.  May have a lead on an Audition B1.  Have both style B1's for 13 Assassins coming from Tokyo as we speak.

If I find a Gozu I'll let you know.
