Bail Gogos rip-off?

Ted,

That poster art is a Vic Prezio ripoff; it's not Gogos.

The 1967 FM cover art was actually first featured on the cover of the Dick Smith Do It Yourself Makeup magazine, that was also published by Warren in 1965. Smith had created this makeup in the magazine with step by step instructions and photos. (I had the Dick Smith mag as a kid, and the Hyde makeup was pretty complex for any 12 year old to accomplish). Here's the '65 mag cover and the actual finished makeup from the mag that the art is based on:

Good one, Jeff.
I should've realized it was Prezio and not Gogos.
Guess I've gotten so used to seeing Basil's work on FM covers.

Agree, Ted. What a run Gogos had with FM.. and to feature such an incredible amount of art, all for one magazine. There is a gallery here in LA, that, several years ago, had a couple of Gogos' original oils on panels, that were done for FM. One was Chris Lee as Dracula, the other was Gogos' Creature FTBL. Needless to say... they were *just* a little expensive.

I did manage tho, to snag for my brother, a pencil signed print he had done of Karloff as Frankie. Good times back then.  ;)

Not a movie poster, but nasty 'inspiration' nonetheless...

Frazetta jungle girl heinie (in reverse)...and Harryhausen dinos from 1,000,000 YEARS B.C.

If I was ambitious enough, I could probably track down the other swipes in this mess-terpiece.  There are others.  wynk

That's pretty fascinating, Ted. I never knew that about Frazetta...what a shame. I can understand using other art as inspiration, but not wholesale lifts like that! Still love a lot of his stuff though.

Yes, Frazetta has inspired several generations of artists.
It is a shame that some of those who were so inspired have then copied his work without giving him proper credit.
While it annoys me to see so many examples, it is a testament (of sorts) to his influence.

Doh! Shows you how tired I am at the moment, I thought Frazetta had pinched the art from those examples you posted! I should have known that his style is so unique it was the other way round. That's good news though, his image is fully restored in my mind, what a great he was.  8)

So I own these 2 posters for John Landis' 1973 Schlock...  US and French.

I also own this Turkish poster for 1971 Murders in the Rue Morgue.

Now, I don't know which one came first, but the same artwork was obviously used for 2 different movies.  Don't know why.

Do you guys know of any similar cases?

Don't we have a thread for this in Genres? Anyway, I would have thought the Gorilla on the French version would have had a bigger smile.

This image of the woman appears to have been originally used in several countries outside of the U.S.A. for Piranha (1978).

If I'm not mistaken, artist William Stout originally painted this piece for the first release of UP FROM THE DEPTHS, 1979.
While PIRANHA might have been produced one year earlier in 1978, I don't think it was released in Australia for a few years.
Good catch, Neo!

Interesting, Brude.  It just seemed logical to me that since the image was used in various countries for Piranha (1978) that the image was stolen from Piranha (1978) and used for Up from the Depths (1979).  This is a case where it helps to know when a movie was released in different countries, as there were several countries that used the image of the woman for their promotional campaigns of Piranha (1978).  Here is a list of all the countries that used the art for their campaigns.

Regardless, it's cool art, and it sounds like you know who the artist is and what you're talking about.   cheers

And while it's not the kind of theft this thread is necessarily about, I'm always on the lookout for this Evils of the Night sheet--anything look familiar?
