Stolen Art
« on: April 01, 2010, 08:08:58 AM »
I know the recycling of art is pretty common, but I just came across a pretty interesting example while researching a poster from the wanted section on this board.  The first image is of a Suspiria poster I purchased several months ago.  No one seems to know much about it.  The only thing I know is that it is near one sheet size (very slightly less) and it came from Chile (but was advertised as Peruvian).  The second is the Italian one panel from The Prowler, aka Rosemary's Killer.  I always wondered what the blade like objects were in the Suspiria poster.  Well, it appears they are the tines of a pitchfork.  The Prowler came out in 1981 and featured a pitchfork wielding baddie terrorizing a New Jersey town.  Since The Prowler was release in 1981, and a pitchfork is an important implement used in the film, I tend to believe that this was the original art and that the Suspiria poster was released sometime after The Prowler in 1981.  I guess it could be the other way around, but I think that conclusion less likely.  Anyway, it is interesting the connections that can be made based on artwork, printing marks, paper, etc in this hobby.

Hello Schan,  Well Suspiria was first released in 1977, does the poster have a date on it?

Nope, there is no date (or any other fine print) on the poster whatsoever.  And yeah, if the Suspiria poster was printed for the original release in '77, then it would have to be the first.  I was just guessing that, based on the pitchfork art, the Suspiria is a later release and copied the RK art.  Without more info, it might turn out to be a chicken vs. egg kind of deal.

How often does this happen? In which a newer poster will base it's artwork on something done previously? Or when a company even unashamedly uses phtographic images from an earlier film on their poster? (Thanks to Matias for starting this topic on another forum). Here are a couple examples:

Seems to me that there are two different things being presented here.  In the first case, the artwork itself is shamelessly borrowed or stolen intact.  In some of these later examples, it is new artwork that has borrowed heavily from the original concept.  I expect we can come up with lots of the second type, as how many ways can you depict a man pointing a gun, or a woman laying on a bed?

These examples aren't correct for this thread. Slapping text over a photographic image of someone's face is rather generic and MOR. It has been done in the past and will be in the future, no doubt. I was talking the use of a poster's unique artwork being lifted or heavily influenced work (as in the RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD Pt 2 poster above) being used.

Anybody see the new Fright Night poster?

Not sure why they wouldn't use the iconic artwork from their original campaign, but hey, whatever...

Nothing like the Russian HELL RAISER poster lifting that artwork so blatantly.
