Good call ladeda! He was tops..thats for sure.

 clap clap clap

He was near impeccable in just about everything. It's saddening that he's not as well remembered as some of his contemporaries.

You are right. He was sublime in Death Takes a Holiday. As in many other of his films. He was pure class.

One of my favourites for sure! I never tire of it. He played a befuddled Prince Sirki to an honestly menacing embodiment of death seamlessly. It's a muddled film at times but no one else could have carried it so convincingly. girly2.gif

To watch him in A Star Is Born and Nothing Sacred, (both 1937) as but 2 other examples... or 9 yrs later in The Best Years of Our Lives (1946).... he is just outstanding!

I know right?  Especially when all we have to do is look in the mirror.  Well your mirror anyways...

Young Gilbert Roland was extraordinarily beautiful.

indecipherable noises

At times he was an absolute doppelganger of the other Gilbert (John). Funnily enough Garbo was rumoured to have had an affair with this Gilbert too...

One mustn't forget the dashingly dastardly Herbert Lom!

Is it time to resurrect this thread?  I've always liked this picture of Bogart that I found many, many years ago.  Photo is by Bert Longworth at Warner Bros.
