Is this water damage?
« on: February 16, 2013, 01:18:49 PM »
Not sure if this is the correct sub-forum, so apologies if it's not. Guess we could always talk about how to fix it and then it'd be ok. Anyways...
Came across a 1-sheet that had the accompanying image. Asked the seller if it was water damage, but they said they wouldn't know.
It looks like it to me, but I don't have that much experience with that type of damage. Could possibly be just wrinkling due to <insert reason here>.
It only appears at that location. I don't see anything similar in the top border (eg, water damage while rolled). Perhaps crimping due to a frame?
Your input would be appreciated. Thanks.

They look like "compression waves" to me.  I see them all the time on posters that have been in frames that are too small OR sometimes in flip frames.

The damage is always permanent - you can't press them out just with heavy weights - but definitely could be fixed with linen-backing or maybe heat press.

If it's not worth sending to a restorer, you'll just have to live with 'em.

Thanks, Mel. I was hoping you'd respond. I think you mentioned in another thread that you'd seen crimping with some of your posters and frames. Thought you'd have a keen eye for it.
What is this heat press you speak of?

I wouldn't try an iron on a valuable poster.

I wouldn't even deal with this copy or those rippling issues. Just wait and look for another that is in better condition.

This poster is fairly common.  ;)

Nice read, Mel. Thanks! Little more than the 2 towels and an iron I was hoping I could do. Oh well.

Looks like moisture damage to me.
And those pinholes look like staples.  How bad are the other corners?

I've been thinking about this one quite a bit...  I have a theory that I need to test out for spot water damage or just spot removal.  I know you can starch back and then peel it off the holytex...  I think I can get it done with some MethylCell a piece of Holytex and a hobby iron...  Anyone have a candidate?  I can look through my spares first I guess or intentionally get one wet...

Was thinking that, too, Ted.. they almost appear to be humidity-induced ripples or waves.

I remember years ago, as a kid, when living back east, having a smaller concert poster in a cheaper frame. The poster was not snugly set into the frame. I grew up in a hot, humid summer climate. The poster developed very similar looking wave patterns, too.  :-\

Sorry, I don't have any more information. I passed on that particular piece. Just recently acquired another one in pristine condition and for a lot less. thumbup

Hey Charlie.
I don't have a water damaged one, but I do have that one with the foxing. Would that qualify for spot removal? Or do you mean water/oil/gunk spot removal?
