Universal Horror posters
« on: November 05, 2012, 05:22:37 PM »
The classic Universal Horror posters and lobby cards still seem to be achieving high prices but I wonder how long this will last. In recent years there have been a few collectors with deep pockets who have helped maintain prices but when their collections are complete or they just stop buying it is possible that prices may drop considerably. This has happened with other genres in the past. I would be interested in the opinions of people on this forum

Could happen.  I mentioned how Model T and Model A prices dropped big time in the late '80s when the people who remembered them got too old to work on them.

Less likely though since Universal Horror seems to have a widespread appeal.  Old collectors stop collecting, but this is the holy grail for new rich collectors.

I've waited 35+ years for the bottom to fall out of the Uni-Horror market.... eyeroll

I'm still waiting, and I now know it won't happen in my lifetime...

I highly doubt there will be any significant price drop in my lifetime.

As I said before, for the iconic classics, I don't think prices will ever really shift significantly downwards.

Disney seems to be in a slump lately.

the major posters that Heritage sold for big big bucks from 2000-2008 and again sold after 2008 took nosedives enough for the G-forces to kill you

This might also have been the case for Universal Horror posters. For anyone looking at Universal Horror as an investment, prices have fluctuated wildly over recent years. Bride of Frankenstein sold for $334,000.00 in 2007. Son of Frankenstein half sheet sold for 89,000.00 in 2007.

I'm sure that they will always be sought after but there are not too many collectors who can afford the astronomical prices that some of the posters have achieved in the past.

Disney's problem is they no longer rerelease every few years to keep the younger generation in the know. This has changed of late with the 3D push, but I doubt any of the classics come to theaters. In addition, they no longer have the shorts and key Disney character animation. THAT is why Disney has slumped. It is also why they have bought Marvel and Lucas out, their characters are dated and it is their own fault.

This in no way correlates to classic horror.

Found these cool, historical photos of The Fantasy Theater, in Rockville Center, Long Island, from June of 1935. A closeup of the front of the marquee reads, in part:

Starts Fri June 21 (or 28th?)   3 Days Only
Boris Karloff in Bride of Frankenstein.

And on the wide shot of the theater building, look at what billboard size poster was posted on the side. To the immediate left of the billboard, it looks like an extra vertical section is added, maybe with more info about the movie. It's hard to read but the top appears to say 3 Days Only  thumbup

Never know.. it looks like the billboard was in a frame, doesnt it? Maybe it was taken down, refolded, and is on a dusty shelf in the basement of that theater, to this day, in some overlooked box.

How cool would that be?

The Fantasy Theater.. then and now.. just a few face lifts since 1935. But at least it is still there.  8)

I'll bring the dust masks and flashlights.

I see that the Fantasy is now a multiplex.. I bet the ENTIRE building was redone, from top to bottom, when it was divided and reconfigured.  :'(

Not a poster, but a photo.

A nice close up of Kharis, from Universal's THE MUMMY'S TOMB (1942):
