Finally got around to doing one of my all time favorite posters no matter what the time frame, a Nightmare on Elm Street British quad. The poster was not the worst thing I ever overpaid for but did have some issues that made me decide to back it instead of leave it be. These included a couple of fold separations one on the left side that was about six inches long was the worst, general edge wear, cello tape that had already reached the dried out yellowed bonded to the ink stage in the corners, some missing surface paper in one corner where someone ripped the tape off in the past, that tacky glue stuff for hanging on walls on the back, a lot of it actually and general crinkling that made it look terrible on the wall. Overall the poster was not in that terrible shape, I make it sound a lot worse than it was, but felt that it was an acceptable candidate to back especially to stop the progression of damage from the cello tape glue and bring it to its former glory. Now to frame it and get it on the wall where it belongs.

No glare and odd reflections either, from the fold creases.. and without any "added fillers or boosting."

Actually it is slightly darker than the image appears. The camera/light make it look brighter. You can still see the fold line touch ups to a degree with the right light and angle because it is a modern gloss poster. I can correct that but that would require methods I don't like to use.

Getting the gloss absolutely perfectly matched is not as easy as it may sound so the reflected light will always be different unless you use paints or top coats with gloss in it mixed to match. In this case I used a water color pencil for the fold line touch ups so getting it burnished to the exact same level is next to impossible. Similar to Chop-Top's complaints on his Soylent Green and Halloween but not as extreme or even close really here. As noted in other threads and by Charlie who did a great job on one of these in the past he commented as well that the black is a bitch. This is mostly because there are no true blacks it is always a shade of grey or blue that appears black to us and the reflection from one method will look different from different angles due to things like the chemical composition and again the gloss levels. The only true way to match, that I have found, is either use a matching ink to replace the missing ink or clear coat the top so that everything matches otherwise it will always be slightly different. I did not want to do either. It is much easier to blend everything together when the poster is flat instead of gloss like the older posters. In those cases it is mostly the color match.

That was too my approach and instructions to the restorer when i had my Godfather II advance - which is almost all black - touched up to remove the folds and lines. Like you say i can see the resto under certain light but it doesnt trouble me or anyone else as one really has to look closely to appreciate it. He did very little work on it. With blacks less is more in my opinion.

I think yours looks impeccable, and the different colours and shades are now more prominent. Well done again.

This one just arrived. Although it wasn't in bad condition, it's a big improvement.

I had originally planned on sending it to Poster Conservation for the restoration (still my favorite place for linen backing), but I wanted to see the work of Jaime Mendez and decided to send it to him, and overall it was a good experience.

Yeah, I wouldn't be opposed to sending more work to JM. Of the few folks who have restored some of my posters, my preferred place for linen backing is Poster Conservation, and for gelatin resizing, Poster Mountain.

I've been curious to try Poster Conservation, too, as they also have a stellar reputation. And, as you mention, for gel backing, PM.

I've only spoken to Jaime on the phone, to get a WC restore quote, and that was a couple years ago. (and it was really just for getting a quote and price comparison with a couple other restorers I was looking at).

Glad it all worked out well, Brandon. That poster now shines!
