Niagara Belgian enquiry
« on: April 25, 2012, 11:47:31 AM »
Hi there. I was wondering if there are any Belgian poster experts on the forum that can help me. I'm thiking of purchasing this poster: which is being advertised as original... but I've now seen this image: which is also advertised as original but I've noticed that the 20th Centry Fox logo in the bottom right corners are different colours (one red, one blue) Now I know the second photo IS original to 1953 as it's on a reliable site so am I to believe that the first image is a re-release? I know that Belgium posters are a tricky area for autheticity so any help would be... well.... helpful! Thanks!  ;D

Actually... after some research on other Marilyn Belgiums this guy has on offer (and finding the original auction that he bought them from (along with the original prices - damn he was gonna make a healthy buck or two)) I suspect that he is selling re-issues without actually realising. May have to give him an email to let him know.

The pic you posted Gemma, looks like a re-pro, and there's lots about. The second image you posted has disappeared...So can't comment.

Well without looking at the info on the bottom of the poster, this looks like an original due to the snipe and stamp on it, but could't say from which release...

Yes I'm with you. I'm guessing that the second image is more likely to be an original 1953 release because of the snipes and stamps and the first picture (the poster i was going to get) must be a re-release (too clean and is slightly a different colour). I'm not chancing it and decided not to buy. I'm not paying premium for a re-release.

I think the first image is a re-pro, not an original, or re-release just a copy.  There doesn't seem to be any info at the bottom of the poster, and there should be...

A little tip on Belgians (if you don't know).  The bottom on original says "Imprime on Belgique".  Many of the 80s repros state "Printed in Belgium"

Not a fool proof especially on the earlier re-releases.

But the snipe and tax stamp likely date this to an original release.

GemGem.. here's a better image of an original Belgian release for NIAGRA. You can see in the lower left border where it reads, Imprime En Belgique.

Ugh - my earlier post which I now cannot edit SHOULD have read "Imprime En Belgique".  I evidently need a proof reader!

I'm in no rush to get a copy. I did had a print of this hanging in my bedroom for years (still have it and I have no shame displaying it as it's my favourite Marilyn film and poster art) but it'll be extra special to own an original and for £125 I thought I had a bargain. But now I know it's not original to the year I'd rather carry on hanging my print until an original comes up. I don't care about values but I'm not going to buy something that isn't really much of a step up from my print.

Here you go, GemGem- currently on ebay  ;):

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NIAGARA-MARILYN-MONROE-HENRY-HATHAWAY-1952-MOVIE-POSTER-34-/150793502864?_trksid=p4340.m1374&_trkparms=algo%3DUPI.GIROS%26its%3DI%252BC%252BS%26itu%3DUCI%252BUCC%26otn%3D9%26pmod%3D170830284595%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8052886420896327594

I bought my first poster from him, in general his prices are insanely inflated, but he does have a few pretty hard to find Italians I've been eyeing at a relatively reasonable price.  The poster I bought from him I've found no where else except Intercard (and I've been trying to buy a poster from Intercard for six months) so in some cases his prices are not too bad, considering he ships 2-day Fedex and only charges $25 shipping (when it costs about $65 to ship 2-Day Fedex from Spain) so about $40 of the poster price is shipping.  But I wouldn't buy anything from him that's ready available anywhere else.  If you can find it somewhere else it will be cheaper.

If that's a Belgian then compared to the HA one it has been trimmed?

Yeah the blank top area has been trimmed.  Very common on Belgians and not really a defect (well to me anyways).

Yes, Benito's prices are Very high but he also has a multitude of things that really havent been seen or offered elsewhere. For those pieces that can be found elsewhere, the price is bound to be lower. But he has rare gems that sparkle, too.  thumbup

Oops...it's this:

As for this one I would have asked what date was printed on the stamp. Most of the time one can read them very well...
