MarqueePoster.com -- News and info
« on: April 17, 2012, 01:04:38 PM »
Hi All-
I've decided to clear out some of my more modern posters... most of which I got in theater lots. I was planning to send them off to eMovie to be auctioned, but I thought I would be a good APF citizen and offer them to y'all first.

There are only 3 reprints in the lot (all of which are for sale): 1) Blade Runner full size 'studio' version [discussed to death in the BR authentication thread], 2) The way under-sized Kill Bill subway [commercial], 3) the Jurassic Park is fishy -- it is double-sided, but undersized by a few inches in each dimensions.  There is also a Temple of Doom video poster, but that is obviously not a bootleg.  Everything else is a legit theater poster.  The Godfather II is 27x40 and rolled, but from what I understand this is from a 90s RR, it's not a bootleg.

CONDITION DISCLAIMER: There are some really nice posters in the lot, but I wouldn't expect many of them to be in NM/Mint condition.  A few are, but the majority were theater-used so expect some handling wear, the occasional pin-holes, tape, etc...  I uploaded full size images, so zoom in check them out.  If you see multiple pictures of a single poster, that means there are multiple copies.  If you see the reverse image of poster, that means I was too lazy to flip it over -- it is a unique copy.  That said, if you see a detail/zoom in shot, that goes with the previous poster -- usually to show flaws that aren't apparent in the straight on shot.  Look carefully, my awesome new lighting/flash setup makes all of them look great at first glance.

PRICE: I'm not looking to make a killing on these... hopefully T and Holiday can attest to that.  I gave them first go at my list for being such wonderful and benevolent hosts.  For this first round to forum members, I'll take 25% less than eMovieposter prices.  Not 25% off the lowest price you can find, I'm being reasonable so I would ask the same of you.  I mean 25% off the fair average-ish price from *recent* sales (no 2003 price comparisons) of posters in similar condition.  Feel free to make reasonable offers as I realize some are not worth much, either because the title or the condition.  The real stinkers I'll probably toss in for free if you ask nicely and buy lots of posters.  If you are going to obsess about every nick and scratch and try to haggle me down, this sale is not for you.  I'm doing this as a courtesy to APF members, but I'm just as happy rolling these up and sending them to Bruce so you can buy them from him.

MINIMUM PURCHASE: Sorry, but 5 minimum to start with.  I have too many posters, not enough tubes, and not enough time to be mailing out individual posters.

Sorry for all the rules, but this is meant clear out some extra stock with minimal hassle on my part.  If you have questions about conditions, ask.  Most of the ones that you would expect to be double sided, are.  I can of course confirm for sure before purchasing.  I'm sure a bunch of you will be interested in the same handful of the titles.  In that case the first order with 5 posters (with $ offers) that includes that poster, they are all yours.  Feel free to submit a list of 5 with offers to secure those, then go back and add more in a separate PM.

Let the feeding frenzy begin!

By the way, I added prices for some of them... but it is tiring work.  If you are interested in one without a price, please just give a quick look on eMovie, take an average for the condition and subtrack off 25%.  If it's reasonable I'll probably accept.

There is something very familiar about that Jurassic Park, but I just can't place it...

For someone dumping his lower end, it's a pretty nice selection.  I have most of those myself...

Actually, I just notice that, unless I am missing something, the Star Wars Trilogy Quad is a reprint (or heavily trimmed original?) - I have that same one...
See http://www.starwarsmovieposter.com/star_wars_uk.htm for the uncropped...

Where did you get the info on the Godfather 2?

That Cinema Paradiso is one of my very few wants...

I attest.

Matt's prices are extremely good.  I have seen a lot of these posters go for much higher on the eBay.  A very nice selection.

Any info you can add would be appreciated.  The print quality looks good and it is DS with a magenta back instead of red.  However, it is undersized by a good 2-3" in each dimension.  I have it sitting on a 27x40 Spiderman for comparison.

After doing a bit more research, it looks like these were actually produced (or factory trimmed) at 27x40" for use in the underground.  Bruce has sold this poster with these exact dimensions before.

Where did you get the info on the Godfather 2?

From someone who worked for Paramount in NYC in the early to mid 90s.  It came in a stack of other legit modern Paramount posters (mostly crap)... apparently he had something to do with distribution within the city.  Although, IIRC it was in some sort of non-theatrical/wilding capacity and not working directly with cinemas.

That is correct.
The original poster was designed for that specific use.
At one time I had both and the paper stock was identical.

That's what I thought! Your dumped posters are my jewels, Matt!

Good prices, good luck with the sale, if I didn't already have Fargo, Unforgiven and Empire Style B, I'd be PM'ing you with 5.

Still nothing on the JP...

The trimmed original/factory trimmed/whatever you want to call it is what I was referring to...The reprint has visible crinkles of the original in the image (near one of the corners if I remember correctly) so it is pretty easy to tell on quick visual inspection.

As for the paramount guy, that would make a lot of sense.  I got a similar bunch of late '80s/early '90s paramount onesheet from someone in an advertising/wilding capacity.  The hard part is that that is when paramount was reprinting (re-striking) a bunch of their posters and was not shy with sending them out for promotional purposes - like the Indiana Jones 4 poster set sent to journalists pimping the Chrystal Skull.

It's funny, I just checked eMovie and my mind must be playing tricks with me.  I could have sworn that I saw an early/mid 90s Godfather I/II release.  Anyway, I trust the source, but I guess I'm not sure what this poster is anymore.  I wonder if it could be a commercial print that Paramount just bought for a really limited showing in NYC?  The Gau logo and NSS print isn't super crisp like you would see on the original, but it is still legible.  Its definitely not blurry repro garbage like you would see from Moviegoods/Loce.

I guess it doesn't matter as it is has just been claimed.  For cheap too... $10.

Get 'em while they are hot folks.  Another day or two of this and I'll be packing them up for eMovie...

Well, like I said, these are mainly dupes I picked up from theater lots.  Hence the multiple copies of some titles.  I already have most of the good ones in my permanent collection (Unforgiven, Fargo, BTILC, ESB, etc...).

I had too much money tied up in those lot purchases that I finally got around to clearing some of them out.  Most of the folded ones (BTILC, BTTF, NSNA, OUATIA, etc...) came from a single lot of like 250+ posters.  Of course, I bought it for $600 because I found out the guy had raided the store room and grabbed a handful of old tiles including, Deliverance, In Cold Blood, and Night of the Living Dead.

Guess which one I'm keeping :-)

That it is from NYC is a good sign, since any re-release/limited showing would almost certainly include showings there.  I don't recall if that was one of the restrike titles, but it would be a prime candidate.

I remember walking past the AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, MD which was displaying a terrible looking Moviegoods-style repro for a showing of Jaws.  It made me sad.

Ok, I'll let this run through this evening and then I'm shipping everything left off to eMovie poster.  So if anyone still wants to pick out some titles, I'll reduce the minimum to 3.  Let me know.  Thanks!

Major update at Marquee Poster!

I've been busy photographing and documenting my collection so it's time for an update -- and it's an important one! There are 50+ new titles headlined by a trio very important Star Wars posters...

First up is the impossibly rare (only known?) Empire Strikes Back "Empire Day" UK double crown poster from the UK Royal Charity Premiere on May 20th, 1980 -- a day before the film was released wide. Click here to read the Marquee Poster blog post for the details of this important event in Star Wars history!

Next is an equally rare Return of the Jedi "comic style" Polish A2 from artist Marcin Chudzik. This previously unknown poster only recently surfaced -- there are only 4 known copies in total. The copy for sale at Marquee Poster is one of the artist's personal copies and 100% of the proceeds will be going to him to help cover medical expenses.

A gorgeous, rolled and near mint Empire Strikes Back Polish A2 from Mirosław Łakomski rounds out the Star Wars entries.

This update also includes many modern classics such as US 1-sheets for Vertigo, R72 Easy Rider, Breakfast at Tiffany's and Notorious and UK quads for The Graduate, and Bonnie and Clyde. I also have a slew of extremely rare titles like US 1-sheets for Dawn of the Dead (green title), 2001: A Space Odyssey wilding posters (Star Child and Psychedelic Eye), UK quads for Night of the Living Dead and The Longest Day (rare advance style) and Japanese B2s for Dr. No (rare style B) and The Maltese Falcon! From the golden age of Hollywood there is a gorgeous Carol Lombard stone litho US 1-sheet for Hands Across the Table and a pre-war Buster Keaton Parlor, Bedroom, and Bath Japanese B2. If art house is your thing, don't miss the rare Blow-Up UK advance quad, Les Diaboliques French A1, German A Bout De Souffle (Breathless) A1 and Riso Amaro Italian 1-sheet. I always try to sneak in a few non-cinema posters as well including the set of Avedon Beatles posters (John, Paul, George, and Ringo), a rare Russian cosmonaut poster, a pair of Herman Miller posters (style A and style B), a Cunard White Star luxury liner poster from the 1940s, and a Chelsea Girls 2nd printing UK double crown signed by the artist, Alan Aldridge. There are many more so please check them out!

Many thanks!  I've been working tirelessly on the backend and there's a big update coming soon.  There will be new posters listed, but it should also fix some small bugs and most importantly, speed up the loading considerably.  Please stay tuned!

I don't know if it's any consolation, but the Bella went to a good home.  Jalouse magazine -- from what I can gather it's something like an edge-ier Vogue from France -- is doing a write up on the 4K restoration and theatrical re-release of Belladonna of Sadness.  They asked for a high res image of the poster for use in their spread, which I of course let them.  After further conversations, it turns out the editor in charge of the piece used to be a film critic in a former life and had a pile of old posters in her collection.  She hadn't added anything to the collection in years, but was inspired to purchase the Bella to go up in her office.  It's only the second B1 I've encountered and the other one was folded.  A rare one for sure!
