Strange that it was '88.  Did Portal do other Bond posters in that year for licensed sell-thru?

For my part, I have never heard of them.  In the 80's in the UK, it was Argus that chucked a load of posters out, but they were from the first 10 Bond films or so.

Cheers Jeff.

Not sure if Portal did other Bonds that same year or not, Simon. Maybe there is a Portal type site that lists everything they have done? Ive never looked for that, though. Maybe they also did other Bonds in other years, too? Might be worth looking into.  sherlockholmes.gif

A friend has seen this and responded via email.

A paste into the thread.  Credited to Robert (hotwaterbottle)

"Portal printed all kinds of posters and greeting cards, with the movie posters being a small part of it. They were always rolled or shrink wrapped on cardboard, and usually measured 20x30. Their main catalogue in the later years were the classic titles like CASABLANCA, WIZARD OF OZ, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, etc. but they did print some posters for a limited amount of time and in much smaller print runs, like DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, an original FRANKENSTEIN lobby card showing the monster,  the original KING KONG insert.

The FYEO poster was probably a small print run poster and available for a limited amount of time. I seem to have a vague recollection that they also did GOLDFINGER, but I could be wrong.

The Portal posters were around even in the late 1960's and were printed on thicker stock and the printing was better. They still pop up on ebay now and then. That said, they remain, at least to me, almost worthless."

So now, I think I will pass on bidding.  Thanks to all for the input and information.

S.

This thread also discusses and lists a good number of the Portal repros that have been offered over the years:

Portal reprint posters were sold in the UK in the 70's and 80's, I bought a couple of them back in the 70's, but don't know their full catalogue. The shops that sold them did have a small, more kind of a pamphlet you could look through to see if there was any others you wanted that the shops didn't stock..  Maybe one of these will surface.

Portal - as others have said.

When I worked in Vectis we received a load of ex-shop stock from a major company in London. Many of the posters were printed by Portal and the only ones I found to be of any value were the music posters because apparently some of those are now very rare and collectable in their own right. Film posters, however, not so.
Best wishes,
Adam

I thought that Roger Moore was a totally pathetic excuse for a spy and after seeing a couple Bonds with him, I couldn't stomach anymore.. He's the man who made me stop seeing Bond (and I had all the Sean Connery Bond toys.. I wanted to be Bond)!! Moonraker, while having cool posters, I think is one of the worst movies of all time

Moonraker was the highest grossing film of the year WORLDWIDE in 1979, something which no other Bond film since has managed and the reason for that is because it was awesome. It had everything, best Bond, best M and Q, best villain (Drax), best henchmen (jaws and chang), amazing stunts (the skydiving and cablecar stuff), Shirley Bassey theme, it even has concorde in it! The only thing missing was an awesome car, but they put that in the next film, the Esprit Turbo in For your eyes only. Also, the amount of money made by Moonraker was not bettered until Goldeneye 16 years later, so looks like most people liked it.
Roger Moore is the epitome of class and sophistication which is why he was perfect as Bond because that was Fleming and Cubby's vision of the character, not the moody angry thug type that Daniel Craig has turned him into, all muscles cuts and bruises. But i suppose that's how the kids like their films these days, all moody and aggressive. Shame really cos the humour was part of what made Bond films so cool. Bring back sherrif JW Pepper, that's whats missing from the new films.  -end rant.

Interesting that D.C has three films in the top 10 and even the very average film Quantum of Solace places 11. The 80s was a poor period, from a financial stand point anyway

Please be assured these answers will in no way sound or look impressive in light of the insanity of T's Bardot thread - or indeed any other like thread.

Suffice to say;

260 UK quads (inc double features) and US/UK/Int 1 sheets.
74 'Other' posters
62 US/UK lobby card sets
24 UK FOH sets
53 Press kits (Or, for example in the case of the early Bonds, collections of the key set stills - in total 737 stills)
28 UK synopsis
25 UK Campaign books
23 US Pressbooks
42 Premiere Brochures (One can see this number is made up of local premieres as well)

And then a selection of other things that have no place on a poster forum.

Ultimately, I am thankfully limited by the number of films, and the fact I decided Not to wander outside the UK/US borders.  Otherwise, where would I end?  The exceptions to this rule the three posters I have displayed.

And now everyone can go back to the eatbrie thread for their 'wow's and 'ah's.

Cheerio.

Hey Simon, do I dare ask what the things are that have no place on a poster forum? Can you at least give us a hint? Or maybe a teaser peak?  binoc.gif

They're all part of your collection...so why not mention them

I was thinking you might have that other, more "secret" collection, that is only spoken about in whispers and darkened hallways. tmi   ;D

To be frank, it is all whispered about in various hallways, dark or otherwise.  And on a forum of the friendly and like-minded, of course.

For the most part, and rightly so, no one else really gives a sh1t.

Do you know if Adam also collects this same kind of extra material for the Bond movies?

Ah, good question.

I know he will have access to odds and sods, but I don't know if it is collected at all.

To be frank, much of this last list was collected when I called up the companies listed in the pressbooks with some cock and bull story about my being a student in the process of writing a thesis about film marketing and corporate sponsorships and the relationships therein.  And to effect such, I would need examples of what they have produced so I can 'review' it.

Now I am older, grown up, and less energetic for such endeavours, much of this has fallen away.

Well, thanks fella.  Not sure everyone would assign 'cool' to this bunch but very happy to take your perspective sir.

The 'art' has taken over, and ever more so since being here.  Hence Boris Grinsson being on the walls now as opposed to something being blu-tacked (UK sticky substance) up on a wall which then left oily deposits on the posters.

Sacrilege, I now know.  And since then, all those poster have been replaced by examples unadorned by such rot.

I agree, the pieces with the art are the typical eye candy and draw, but all your misc.pieces add up to a fine, total grouping, Simon.  thumbup

Greetings fellow Bond fans. I've been away from posters for a while but they are never far from my mind.

Is it just me or are prices/valuations of Bond material creeping up slightly of late?

I've only been collecting posters for a short time, and I have to say that Bond posters is one area/genre I've been a little afraid to get into, nearly all the decent bond UK quads (the type of Bond posters I'd mostly want) are "always" expensive, especially any of the Connery Bond films, and many of the best Moore UK quads (Live and Let Die, MWTGG etc.) are also very pricey.

So some fantastic Bond posters around for sure, if you can afford it.
