An interesting comparison of the Struzan and unknown artist, whose design for BTTF was not used. What caught my eye is how both artists chose to use an image of Fox with the same expression on his face, along with him looking at his watch. Unless the artists were given a production still to base their work on, perhaps?

I rotated the image from the rejected concept piece, on the right, in order to better show the comparison.

I came across this piece by Italian artist, Anselmo Ballester. I think his artistry was just top notch. I dont know what film this was done for, maybe Son of Dr Jekyll (1951) (or another Hyde-themed flick), but I think it's a very cool image.  notworthy.gif

I know that Martinati did the Italian posters for Son of Dr Jekyll, so maybe this was, an early concept that was submitted by Ballester but rejected?  dontknow.gif

Jeff, I thought that I had seen that image used somewhere but can't place it. This poster looks as though it was influenced a bit by it though:

Hey Martin,

I just read on this blog that the Ballester art was an Italian poster concept for the Argentinean film called El Extrano Caso Del Hombre Y El Bestia” (The Strange Case of the Man and the Beast) from 1951 and directed by Mario Soffici.

https://wendylovesjesus.wordpress.com/2012/09/22/the-art-of-horror/

The final poster that Ballester did was this one:

Interesting, never seen that Ballester poster before. I actually prefer the concept art from your earlier post to the choice used in the finished poster - it's a more interesting take on the Jekyll/Hyde split personality - not to say that the Argentinian poster isn't appealing in its own right.

The Ballester piece is not a concept poster. It's the original art for the italian 2 fogli.

Hey Martin, just for clarification, the Ballester poster above is Italian, not Argentinean.  ;)

The movie itself is an Argentinean flick.

And the dual face concept is very cool, I agree with you, too. Would love to see how this would look on the finished poster, with title, credits etc.

Its from Deviant Art.  Fan-made by Robert Armstrong.

Found these in an antique shop in Portsmouth a while back.
Look like rough concepts for movie posters.

I didn't buy them! Both would have set me back just shy of £2000!

Very cool to see how the Educating Rita piece was assembled and put together with the various, cut pieces, too.

Unused design vs. rare recalled first advance "Lucky Strikes" design (both designed by INDIKA)

*****

Expecting 10% chance of reply, I emailed INDIKA:

In 2012 I was fortunate to buy a "true" original of the famous Pulp Fiction "Lucky Strikes" movie poster for $400 from a former theater employee. Now it ALWAYS auctions for $1,500+.

I created an "authentication" webpage for it: http://moviepostercollectors.guide/MPC_Authentication_Pulp_Fiction.html

It's quite famous among collectors and is by far the most valuable 1990+ MP.

Your time is valuable but I have a few Qs for you:

After Miramax released this poster to theaters, which displayed them, RJ Reynolds threatened to sue Miramax for featuring its cigarettes without its permission. (Miramax had also used the novel “Harlot in the Heart” without permission, although it is unknown if the publisher also threatened to sue).  To end the litigation threat, Miramax ordered theaters to return ALL copies of this poster or pay a $10 fee for each poster not returned.  When the recall occurred, no one knew Pulp Fiction would be a monster hit. Most theaters complied with the return order. In fact, some Lucky Strikes posters only survived because theater employees lied about destroying the poster but actually kept it!  Presumably, Miramax destroyed the posters that were returned.  For all the foregoing reasons, the recalled Lucky Strikes poster is extraordinarily rare for a modern movie poster. It rarely pops up for auction.

1) Is the foregoing accurate?

2) Were the returned originals destroyed?

3) Who was the "creative designer"?

4) Did Tarantino like/approve this design?

5) Why just feature Thurman?

6) Any clue this would be a monster hit?

Thanks!

Knowing that these sold for peanuts on eBay, I’m very interested to see how they do.
