Why do YOU collect posters?
« on: September 19, 2011, 08:57:11 PM »
As I look at all the great websites many of you have put up on the internet, I am absolutely amazed at the diversity and focus of the many collections there are out there.
The posts on this forum and NSFGE serve to reinforce the differences and similarities between many of us.
I am really interested in what makes each of us tick, so I thought I'd start a thread that asks the most simple questions: why, what, when, how, etc.

Many of you contributors have revealed much about yourselves already, but I thought it would be neat if we had a thread that is literally devoted to our own personal philosophies.
I hope that each of you can consider some of these questions when you post:

Why do you collect movie posters? or advertising posters? or concert posters? or any kind of posters?
What started your obsession for this hobby?
What do you personally look for in a new acquisition?
Did another hobby, interest or passion lead you to movie memorabilia?
How do you collect?
What makes you buy one movie poster and not another?
How does this hobby affect your life?
Do you budget your purchases or buy impulsively?
Where and how do you shop?
Collections and sub-collections -- Why do you do it and how do you differentiate?
...and on and on.

I'm not looking for one-line answers to these complex and personal questions.  Elaborate.
Despite some petty differences, we're all friends here.  Tell us more about yourself.
Let's start a long-running conversation about our personal philosophies about our mutual passion for the greatest hobby there is.
Howzabout it?

This is a great thread guys.  I found out a lot about myself when writing up my about me section of my webpage.  You should give it a try.

Personally I keep seeing people buy things and I ask have they ever seen that movie?  I wonder what the answer would be?

Personally, I have only done this impulsively or knowing I was getting great value.  Like the box of old 1-sheets I got a while back.  Else, actively, I only seek movies I have seen and love.  (or seen and love the actress)

Simple answer, I LOVE movies, I also love art, but there is often better art than movie posters, the combination is what I love, plus memories, my sasquatch daybill means more to me than most posters/ value? Maybe $10. but I saw it aged 4 at the Albany drive ins, and fell in love with horror, I wouldn’t trade it for anything, its ugly, crap film, it is MY history for film and especially horror. I see stunning posters worth a fortune, sure id like them, but Sasquatch if value means nothing, $ value, I wouldn’t trade it for a Franky 1 sheet.

I found out a lot about myself when writing up my about me section of my webpage.

That write-up on your site is what got me thinking about this subject, Charlie.
Even though I had somewhat formed my opinions of your particular poster-collecting habits by looking at what you post to the forum, I didn't have a full understanding of why you seek out certain items. When I read your 'bio,' it told me worlds about your collecting rationale and gave me a better appreciation for your 'focus.'
Hence, it broadens my horizons and increases my appreciation for some niches in this hobby that I have overlooked.
As a fellow collector who is constantly inundated with movie and art information, I find some of the most interesting reading to be about this strange bunch of people who collect all these 'colorful bits of paper' (with all apologies to my friend, Ari).

"Why do you collect movie posters? or advertising posters? or concert posters? or any kind of posters?"
"What started your obsession for this hobby?"

MMA, Movie and art prints. It started out when I was 13. I lived next to a video store and they where free! I guess that got me used to having posters on my walls, lucky for me mom was cool with that. I think it might also be a hereditary thing with me because Mom, Grandpa and Great Grandpa have and had supreme collections of different items, coins, arrowheads, mounts and paintings we all share a collecting obsession.

"What do you personally look for in a new acquisition?"

It's hard for me to choose between image, price or rarity but I do like having items that no one else has and I can't resist a good deal on a striking image. Two of the three usually gets me to buy. VVV

"How does this hobby affect your life?"

It looks like a poster bomb want off in my house and all of my friends say that i'm weird for not going out or on a trip with them because i'm saving up for a poster but F them, I DO WHAT I WANT!!!! I'll be honest... when I fist got a computer 12 years ago it was only for porn.... but now when I log on it's all about ebay, Rinkya and craigslist.

"Do you budget your purchases or buy impulsively?"

Two years ago I put myself 7K into debt after a few bad months of impulse buying. I basically had to work seven day a week for a summer to pay it off, so needless to say I learned my lesson and this year I have only bought when the funds where ready and available in my paypal account.

"Where and how do you shop?"

Anywhere I can find a good deal to be honest. There is one guy who I buy from regularly and I could honestly spend every penny that I make just buying prime stuff from him, but I do like to look around and make new contacts, trading partners and friends.

Why do you collect movie posters? or advertising posters? or concert posters? or any kind of posters?

Not sure, but it is a sickness I cant stop... I think it was the idea a poster was a cheap way to make a wall look interesting, but it also had a history, viewed by the masses many years ago.

What started your obsession for this hobby?

I was putting on an 80s party and thought it would be good to give the place some atmosphere with a poster or two. Found a Thierry hates "French Grande" poster promoting a 1987 concert tour of Madonna in Paris. It was written in French and the ebay ad said it was used in bus shelters in Paris. Looked like a great image to me and as an original with some history, and big, thought it a good choice. I never owned a poster till that point (about 4 years ago when I started collecting).

It was folded and I didnt like the folds so I spent a fair bit of time researching how to remove them... Found somewhere that said they could steam them out ( a conservation place) but they said I should take it to a linen backer, and found one in Sydney. I went to his store and there I saw heaven... colorful large advertising posters: french & italian wow! I then looked and found some pricey advertising posters online which I bought. Then expanded into movie posters.

What do you personally look for in a new acquisition?

Size... size counts. I like'em big... US 1 sheet size and bigger (eg 3ht, 6sht). My main focus has been of late italian 4F & 2F and French Grands and Double French Grands. Probably more important though is color - got to have strong colors, else I want to throw them in the bin. They have to be art ie drawn... no photos (apart from madge). I hardly watch movies although starting to see a few classics lately. I have no desire to get a poster for a movie I like, unless it has great art work... but the posters I like have great art due to the movie being likely sh!t... a B movie - unknown actors so no point putting their floating mugs on the poster when great art then is used to sell the movie. Also look for boobs and legs and a hot face (am I allowed to be so superficial? oh yeah, who cares). I was shocked when I reviewed my collection and near every poster had a sexy woman on it (shocked as I might need to get out more). If no woman then a monster, then great art.

I also have a sizable stash of mexican lobby cards. Doesnt really conform to the size criteria, but they have art and a scene from the movie. Didn't like the combo (art and scene) at first but now really like it, especially as there are lots of boobs, but also because they are cheap and it quickly fills holes of titles I just will never own... but they still need to have great art.

Oh, also am into condition so I keep away from foxing, but tears and small missing bits I'm getting more tolerant of... restoration can fix. Oh, I also much prefer unbacked posters, even though I dont mind getting them backed myself. I dont buy as an investment, just want to display pretty posters. I don't really rule out any size or country. I collect mainly 50's and 60's posters. Posters from before then, the people are drawn odd, not to my taste.

Did another hobby, interest or passion lead you to movie memorabilia?

I grew up collecting stamps, heaps, like my only interest back then, soaking them, drying them, filing them, hundreds of thousands I guess. Still have every one. I guess re movie posters, advertising posters led me to them - to expand the horizon.

How do you collect?

It cycles, sometimes looking for Italian posters, then for weeks looking for circus posters, then mex lobby cards, the advertising posters. I usually don't have a $ limit, well, under 10K I suppose for a rare special one, but right now being out of work 9 months I trawl for cheapies, under $100.

What makes you buy one movie poster and not another?

Art, women/monsters, minimal writing, looking for a statement piece for a big wall space. What movie or what stars its got matters very very little.

How does this hobby affect your life?

It is my main focus, trawling websites, over and over and over and over. Its a sickness, I'm sick. I'm still buying, even though things are financially a bit grim for me at the moment.

Do you budget your purchases or buy impulsively?

I buy impulsively. I go into debt rather than saving first.

Where and how do you shop?

90% ebay, 9% checking over about 60 online stores, 1% in bricks and morter stores.

Collections and sub-collections -- Why do you do it and how do you differentiate?
...and on and on.

I consider I have 3 areas of interest, movie posters, advertising posters, and circus posters (well it is advertising, but I focus on that area big enough to seperate it out). I enjoy the art so doesnt really matter what its for.

When I was a kid, back in the '50s, I used to spend a lot of time at the movies.  My parents owned a photography studio, and it was located on a busy intersection.  I could take the bus, and easily be in reach of a dozen theaters.

I loved to go to the matinees, but there were so many choices.  My sister and I would leve early and go run the row of the Milwaukee downtown theaters.  We would scan the posters on the marquees and choose what looked interesting.  I kind of learned that I could get a better feel of a film by looking at the display of lobby cards and stills than I could from the larger posters, so we would study them carefully and choose our movie that way.  I think that has carried over to my collecting as I have a heavy dose of lobbies in my collection.

I collect posters because I know the end of days is coming and I need to have some stuff to throw in the fire to keep warm.
I'll also be using some for blankets

Quick answer, nostalgia, boobies. Long answer…

I first became aware of posters in the back seat of our family car, stuck in various traffic jams in Bristol, UK, in the late 70’s. I can tell you more or less exactly because I was looking at dozens of posters flyposted on vacant buildings and walls alongside tour posters for bands. Mott the Hoople was one of the bands and Vanishing Point (1971) one of the movie posters. Can you imagine, dozens and dozens of UK Quads blithely pasted up exposed to the elements until they in turn get pasted over? Shudder. I think the next time I passed it was covered by Decameron (1971) and I watched them change weekly right up until Puppet on A Chain (1971) then I must have stopped paying attention. So 1971, definitely. I was 11 and I decided I wanted some of those for my bedroom. I just didn’t know where to get them from.

In a department store building now long bulldozed, Fairfax House if you are on old Bristolian, the bookstore had on its shelves The House of Hammer. This book was published 1973 (I just reached up for it to scan the front for you, it still smells of my lost youth…) when Hammer was theoretically still going strong. The cover caught my eye and I would later realize it was the art from Twins of Evil (1973). That cover, that poster and the many others reproduced in the book along with the glorious Hammer cleavage of the day would get me fully hooked. Thanks to a listing in the back of the short lived World of Horror magazine in 1974, I purchased three quads for Twins of Evil / Hands of the Ripper, The Vampire Lovers / Angels From Hell and Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, which were pinned straight on to my bedroom wall. At 15 Pounds for all three that cleaned my piggy bank out.

I always meant to buy more but I discovered there was more to being a teenager than Hammer no matter how much biting of Veronica Carlson went on. I got into music, beer and one expected to put a down payment on a girlfriend.

The poster thing was still in there, but I started literally ripping off the Band posters after they had just been glued up instead. Movie posters had stopped being flyposted by then. I had quite a collection of crusty music posters for a while, only a few have survived, which is a pity.

It all went dormant until Ebay, then I thought hang on, all the posters I wanted I can finally afford, I have job now! And then I discovered how much Hammer posters were now trading for…

I have tried to stick with quads and generally I like anything that is sensational, lurid or nostalgic. Every genre I seem to get into, everyone else does too and the prices shoot up. Sigh. I am currently into dodgy dubbed sand and sandal epics (“Son, do you like gladiator movies?”), peplums I have learned they are called. There’s Christians eating lions, manly men, wonderbra women with vast and wondrous scenes I am sure the actual movies never had the special effects budget for.

It bugs me I can wipeout my budget in a bidding war for a poster this week, only to see the same poster sell next week for a fraction. It amuses me that some poster’s show up again every other week optimistically described as “rare”. I self centeredly believe that posters for obscure films that were neither loved by the masses, nor the critics, still go for ridiculous amounts of money, apparently just because I want them. I have series I am still trying to complete, nostalgia bombs I can’t seem to win the bids on (Vanishing Point is still on my wish list) and posters I don’t actually like but still need to own just because they remind me of a significant time in my life. I still know very little about the posters, unless it’s signed or in Sim Branaghan’s excellent “British Film Posters” I couldn’t guess who did them. When I write about them on my webpage I am mostly just waffling about what you can plainly see for your self. I am trying to learn more, here, at LAMP, emovieposter and other forums.

They come into this house but they never leave, I have duplicates I could never consider selling. It’s a crazy hobby, but I love them all.

Mark

I agree it is a crazy hobby.  The amount of fraud in this shit is stupid.  I bought my first one sheet because i was searching for a VHS copy of it in the late 90's on ebay (return of the living dead). I saw the poster and thought it was awesome.  $40 and week or so later it was on my doorstep.  I unfolded it and felt like it was an artifact.  everytime I look at my framed posters I think of what theater they may have hung  20 or 30 years ago.  Owning original posters is owning cinematic history and awesome artwork.

Interesting thread! I'll have a go at a few of your questions, Brude! Btw, never seen your photobucket page until tonight...great collection, added quite a few to my want list off the back of looking at your posters.

I worked in a video shop when at school and started watching a silly amount of films from the age of about 16 onwards. I used to take the old video shop posters, but binned them all when I went onto University (bar a battered old Pulp Fiction). When I moved into my first flat, I decided to buy a couple of posters to hang...and it went from there.

I think collecting posters comes from my love of film and some sort of collecting compulsion (I have a silly amount of DVDs too). I mainly collect UK quads and US One sheets, but like any nice looking posters. I collect contemporary stuff as it's what I can afford and I'm more connected with the films of the 70s to now. I buy if I like the art/design or like the film (or both), although sometimes I buy the odd poster for no good reason. I mainly use ebay to buy, I wish I had a few more contacts so I could save some £! I'm quite a bad impulse buyer, but went about 3 years without buying a thing, although I have got the bug back again recently. I have about 300 posters now, so my collection is pretty small compared to most here, although too big for my wife! Quite a lot of my posters are pretty junky, but most mean something to me and hopefully I'll look back in a few years and be glad that I bought a few of them when I did.

Originally, to hang on my wall, as a teenager,
Then to put away in boxes.
Then to put on my wall again.
Except certain sub collections, that are collected for the fun of putting together a collection, specific.
They will probably never make my walls, because I wouldn't know which to choose and I couldnt possibly display the all.
I put all sorts of things on my wall though, not just movie posters, I collect Religious art, sea faring art, stuff I just like.
Nothing valuable, usually found on the side of the road or at thrift shops, garage sales etc.

But I love Movies, so Movie posters are great to look at and think about a great film.

Always loved movies, well since I can remember, we didn't have  TV when I was a young kid, so for the first years of my memory it was only the Drive ins, when I got a little older and could walk myself, Saturday matinees at the local cinema,

When we did get TV it was only 2 stations, and really not the best. Although I saw my first Hammer films at a young age on late night TV (no adverts either).

I started collecting Beta and VHS tapes, and also video posters, I just stuck the posters up, and enjoyed them, also fangorias etc and stuck up the posters or cut out pics for my walls. First Theatrical posters I go for my 15th Birthday from my Mother (dawn of the dead au 1 sheet and martin daybill). Both went on my wall.

Still love movies, wouldnt buy them if I didnt love the movies they represent.

I started much the same way, tacking up posters and pics from movies that I connected with.
My bedroom quickly became a shrine to the horror and sci-fi films that I would watch at the local cinema.
Soon, I was incurably hooked.
Good times.
