Post-auction analysis - OMGs!, LOLs!, WTFs!, whatev....

My rolled Halloween was 10 years ago.  On Ebay.  $280.  I guess prices have gone up a lot.  I wish Bruce had a way to sort by condition, because I will not linenback and anything lesser than "Very Good" is of no interest to me, especially when 90% of "good to very good" items can be found in great condition.

I don't have a BTTF NSS version, only the studio and advance.  But the NSS rolled versions I ever see have a GCIU logo.  I am not fully aware of the history of GCIU but I often see them associated with home video posters. Is that the case for BTTF too?

I own a bunch of US Back to the Future one sheets, advance, studio and NSS, but none of them are easily accessible.  Scratch that, they are accessible but it takes me forever to put everything back and I'm way too lazy.  So I can only go by the picture I have on my website, which is old.  But if this is the one in question, I can assure you it's an original theatrical NSS.

Personally, I don't think any of those Back to the Future posters are worth getting, not the NSS, not the studio, at the prices I have seen them go to.  The only one worth getting is the Advance, because at least it's slightly more difficult to get.  One went at HA tonight and sold for $1k and that is a good deal.

Yes I'm glad I already have the advance which I think I paid about the price for a studio for.  It was listed as an advance in the listing I guess I just had a lucky day all those years ago.

Well after saying that people in general don't care about backing, I wonder if this Heritage auction will be remembered as the one where people finally started to note significant price differences between restored/unrestored, signs of a crash in general, or a blip on the radar?

Not sure I can remember prices being this depressed on big/featured lots across the board.
Could also signal a real shift of what collectors chase as GA cinema fades from memory and focus sharpens on 80s-up pieces.

Unrestored and just as important - unfaded. This set is notorious for fading and collectors have long sought out great looking examples.
Having said that, I do agree that the price was still high.

But...don't let a couple of the outliers distract from the overall disappointing results.
War of the Worlds Style B halfsheet $8K,
Day the Earth Stood Still Quad $4K
Son of Frankenstein one sheet $42K!!! (Pretty sure the owner paid more than double this price for it)
Bride of Frankenstein TC $30K - Next to the Mummy TC, this is considered the most desirable Universal Horror TC and 10 years ago most dealers would have paid more for it than this.
Maltese Falcon - down 30-40% across the board,etc etc
One Animation collector is single-handedly lifting that area right now, but to me most of the results are the kind that make people say - I'm not sending them anything.

I wanted to bid on one of the posters. But 5 days ago, they raised the price to meet the reserve?? Surprisingly no one ended up bidding on it. But I didn’t know they raised the prices days on auctions?? I was going to bid the price listed prior to them raising it…
I can’t justify it, they raised the price $2500 for it to meet the reserve, then it’s another $2500 on top for the buyers premium. Like it’s way too much, especially when I use Canadian pesos to USD… But I was kind of bummed seeing they raised prices, didn’t know they did that…

Heritage policy has almost always been to start lots at half of the low estimate ($7500 on something estimated at $15,000-30,000).
Sometimes buyers won't consign an item without a reserve, it stinks but I totally get it. If natural bidding doesn't meet that reserve than Heritage will raise the price before the auction so that the next bid does meet the reserve and the piece can actually sell. Most of this is spelled out in those pages of fine print in the catalog no one ever reads.

A Wizard of Oz insert that is mostly covered in paint sold for $20,000 at HA today. One in similar shape sold a few years back for $8,000 at Emovie. Insane price! I thought I could snag it for a fairly good price. Not the case at all. lol

Agree and slightly disagree. The problem with the insert on this title (besides collectors preferring the TC, both half sheets, the MWC, the 3Sht, and the better one-sheet) is that there are three or four very heavily restored copies of it around that have been shopped endlessly and seemingly sell for less every time one comes up which taints the others. I'm not aware of an unrestored copy of the insert having sold for less than $20,000 since the early 90s and certainly compared to the (almost same)  price that the half sheet brought today the insert certainly seems high.

BUT... compared to the $32.5 million that the Ruby Slippers sold for today, it's just a drop in the bucket and an easy buy to display with the Slippers.

The Academy usually relies on mega-rich celebrities to buy them and donate them back to the Academy. They have some budget for buying items, but they just don't like dropping half a mil on any of them.

Wow, that's an amazing result. I had to have a search as to what the highest result for a piece of film memorabilia was prior to this...apparently it was Marilyn Monroe's white dress from The Seven Year Itch that sold for $4.6m.

That was a surprising result. I thought it had stalled out at ¥611,000 - which would already have been a record for it by far, then it got a bunch of new bidders.
All bidders over ¥100,000 were foreigners which makes sense considering how weak the yen is right now.

This is a very rare size and a very rare poster. Had tons of watchers on it. I had a dream I might be able to steal it in the ¥500,000 range, but that was pretty quickly dashed.
Great piece and congrats to the buyer.  One of a few rare pieces that sold this weekend including an original B2 for Warning From Space.
