Wow, really?  I find it extremely sad that a poster dealer, meaning someone whose business it is to buy and sell movie posters, therefore someone who should know a little bit more about them than say the average collector, would have to google "Ballester".  Granted, Anselmo Ballester is no "Pretty Woman," but still...

Maybe this will help.

I'd do unspeakable things for Ballester's Salome.

The good news (for me, at least) is that there are so many linenbacked pieces it really limits the amount of posters I am interested in.  Case in point, this To Catch a Thief.  If it had been folded, I would have gone for it.

T

I want one to display, so would prefer it on linen out of the gate.

Passed on this one because the whole 'linen trimmed to borders of the poster' seems both scary and inane, IMO. Pass.

I know that Ballesters are very difficult to find in any condition and that a long time can go by without one coming up for sale.

You'll just have to read all the archived threads at Not Suitable for General Exhibition,  Rosa  :)

Dave and his wording on ebay listings were a cheerful topic of discussion. For quite some time.

A funny read...

Is anyone familiar with this 1955 Indian poster or film, called Pather Panchali? The poster itself is a bit bland, with some B/W photos in the center. And it sold for $3000.00 yesterday.

Is it Uber rare maybe?

Rare, yes! Debut film of one of the finest and influential auteurs Satyajit Ray.

The poster is nothing to look at but an immensely important nugget of cinema history. - I'm a little chuffed I got mine for under $300. ;D

Thanks, ladeda!

When did you buy your copy?

<$300-3000.00 is quite the price spread.

ok...so this is one of those questions that really has no good answer - that said, I'm throwing it out there.  I get the 'country of origin' stuff but please advise...

In this past weekends HA auction - how does this poster....

go for 1/2 of 1% of this...

Is it harder to find? Doesn't appear so.
Is the image that much better?  IMHO maybe slightly, but they're both great images.

Also, movie was filmed in an Argentinean casino, so why does this US version go for 200 times the Argentinean????

the black style is an iconic poster that everyone wants.
the rest of us think the yellow poster is rather boring

I'll go even further. The black style is the only piece of paper on the title worth having, aside from the gambling lobby card for my gambling collection

It's not only that the black style is iconic Rich. There's an arg version with the same image an it too goes for waaaaaaay less than that US one

I'll concede you that she looks a bit like a tranny on the arg black style

Country of origin is just a small part of the thing. Truth is that the majority of collectors who spend big money on posters are from the US, so a poster in their language appeals more to them.

In addition, it always takes 2 to tango, regardless of the poster, in any auction.

In this case (and like the Casablanca insert) 2 (or more) heavy rollers were determined to have this Gilda OS and got into a bidding war. Had one (or 2) of those deep pocketed players NOT been there, that day, and bidding, there is always the possibility it could have sold for less.

Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, $33K realized, really fantastic in the 3S format:

I happened to find another 50 Foot Woman linen backed 3 sheet, available for sale in the UK.

The dealer there is only asking £35,000 ($57,865.00 USD)  :o

So I just paid Heritage and I'm a little taken aback.  Not only do they charge the seller and the buyer, not only do they charge an extra 9% for California residents, they also charge 3% if you use a credit card on purchases over $2,500.  Really, they can't eat that fee?  They don't make enough?  A little pissed off.

They nabbed you for the 9% sales tax, T, because they have their other office here in Beverly Hills.
