Drew Struzan or John Alvin

I prefer Drew as John Alvins' always a lot of his work seemed to appear to have an 'air brushed' feel to it.

I was meaning in general, I don't have 2 particular posters I'm referring to.  :)

I say this as someone who likes his work quite a bit - if you've seen one Struzan you've pretty much seen them all.

If the only two posters Alvin ever did were the one sheets for Blade Runner and (advance) Beauty & the Beast. he would still be one of the best modern film poster artists going.

Now THIS post does need some pics  :)

It's interesting what you say about DS but surely having a familiar style shouldn't be a bad thing. I'd call it a continuity of excellence!  ;)

But shouldn't a good artist be able to change their direction, even if just a little?
Best wishes,

I disagree.  Some of the early Struzan is much different.  If all you had seen was his later work, you probably would not be able to pick out some of the early stuff as his.  Food of the Gods is one that immediately comes to mind.

I'm not sure about the positioning of the claw imagery, even whether or not it should be there at all, but nevertheless, it is absolutely superb IMO!
Best wishes,

I bought this as a fan of the Marx Brothers and it wasn't until recently I discovered it was Drew Struzans first paid work.

Paul, do you have the Empire of the Ants quad as well?

I have always dug the Struzan counterpart, in terms of his earlier stuff, but the quad is just as fun...similar to Food of the Gods.

Both are remarkable artist and its hard to choose who I favor between the two.

One title that I can recall that both artist did posters for is Goonies. I prefer the Alvin Map Style over Drew Struzans version.

Great example and direct comparison here, Cj.  Especially great to see a title they both designed for, as both Goonies pieces are great examples of both artist's design aesthetics.

Good call.

My Alvin collection needs to be seriously updated (my Struzan does too, but at least it's more complete), so to help you decide, here are my links:
