Hello From Yorkshire, UK
« on: February 17, 2025, 06:13:04 AM »
Hello,

Thanks for having me here! For the last couple of years I've been getting into the movie poster game and only just found this incredible forum!

I've been collecting lots of different posters and started using emovieposter.com to get some niche items and bulk lots to rapidly expand the collection. Any other auction sites that people recommend? Also, as my collection has grown it would be great to get some tips on how you all safely store them!

What I care mostly about is the condition of what I buy.  I want my posters in mint condition, or as close to mint as the passing and damage of time will allow.  So Emovie is always a great source.  Heritage is okay, although their grading is absolutely horrendous since Grey Smith jumped ship so you must really check the pictures and cross fingers.  Propstore is good, this time thanks to the same Grey Smith.  Ebay is always an option, but 90% of sellers have no idea how to pack and ship posters.  Dale Dilts, who is a member here, is pretty much the only safe source on Ebay for modern posters.  Since you live in the UK, there are a few good sellers that I trust for quads, but it took me quite a few attempt to find them.  Most sellers do not understand what mint means.  Some collectors don't care, and if it is your case (you did mention buying bulk lots), then the world is your oyster and you'll be fine.  There are a few boutique out there, but their pricing are all over the place and you could end up spending 10x what an item is actually worth.  It wouldn't be a service to a new collector to name them on a public forum, but you can do your homework.  Good luck.  It's a fun hobby.

Welcome, sisisimoore!

Do you collect any particular format or genre?

I mainly buy from ebay, but I agree with T that it can be hit and miss depending on the seller and if they know how to pack. emovieposter are excellent. I dislike using it because of Zuckerberg, but Facebook groups can be decent too - e.g. 'UK Quad Cinema Posters' allow people to sell at the weekends

Regarding storage - depending on the size of your collection and the format you collect, a Baroque portfolio might be an idea as you can leaf through your collection and store it flat under a bed. If you have the space, a flat file/plan chest can be really good. If you search ebay UK for 'plan chest', you'll find something appropriate and for a good price if you're patient (I got a 10 drawer A0 sized wooden plan chest for £100 a few years ago).

welcome1 Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! Sorry to be a little late, but I’ve been… A bit under the weather, shall we say. But what does it matter? Welcome! It’s nice to have you here. I do hope that you will enjoy yourself. Look around the site. Ask questions. People are friendly and helpful here. Thierry (T) had very good points about the conditions of posters, and the places that sell them and their grading system. Tob’s suggestion of the Baroque portfolios was also excellent. I have one and it’s been great to be able to flip through and see some of my posters instead of having them all stuck in drawers and in storage. You’ve come to the right place. I’m anxious to see your collection and hope that you’ll share it with us. Everyone has to start off somewhere. We all started off with small collections that grew overtime. It is a great hobby as T said. Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!

Welcome!  I also just joined the forum late last year and have only been collecting for overall a few years (but now fully committed to sustaining the addiction).

Echoing what everyone else already said, the Baroque portfolios are my new best friend(s). I now have five of them and have started building a wooden shelved storage cabinet for them (10 shelves for 10 portfolios). They are expensive though and I would say the theoretical 100 poster limit per binder is really pushing it, particularly if you need to open up the rings to move things around. If you have 1000s of posters, i don't think the portfolios are an economical option for price and space. I also have some bags and boards I got from bags unlimited almost 10 years ago when i first starting collecting but now I only really use those for short term storage for any new posters coming in before loading them into my portfolios.

I pretty much buy from eBay a lot now (mostly cheap posters, some with moderate condition issues) and supplement with emovieposter auctions for more expensive items I would rather not chance buying from someone on ebay. I gave up on the Heritage auction site after one try last fall as i am just too spoiled by the emp process of bidding and uncomplicated costs. I have also bought one time from a seller named Rendezvous Cinemas (based in UK), although many posters are not in the best condition (if that is important to you), but there is free shipping in the UK supposedly (I am in the US).

Can't wait to see some of your stuff.

-Mike
