Hi everyone from Taipei, Taiwan
« on: November 18, 2024, 04:08:58 AM »
Hi all and mods! (你好!)

Thank you for welcoming me to the forum!

My name is Kai, and I’m from Taipei, Taiwan. My brother and I are very amateur poster collectors. It's a hobby we discovered after watching some more classic films and started using Letterboxd. Collecting original posters isn’t widely understood or appreciated in my country and likely won’t be in the future, but I’m grateful for the small yet thriving online community that shares this passion :). (By the way, I recently just learned that a "Taiwanese 1 sheet" is typically 69 x 98 cm or 27.16 x 38.58 in, although other sizes exist as well.)

Today, I finally took some time to unpack a few of my posters and snap some photos. Below is a glimpse of a few pieces from my humble collection, and I hope I can keep updating here whenever I acquire a new one.

(All of them are DS, except for La La Land, Aftersun, and A Space Odyssey R1980.)

Hello Kai, welcome to the forum!  welcome1

Thanks for sharing your collection, some nice ones there (that Midsommar is quite a tricky one to find).

Are paper posters still used in cinemas in Taipei? Or is it mainly digital advertising? Do they use the same key art as in the US? Or do you get different designs?

Cheers,
Tob

Nice stuff Kai.  Little Mermaid was also one of my first posters.  In 2001.  A gift from Jeffrey Katzenberg (he used to run DreamWorks where I worked at the time).  He produced it in 1989 over at Disney and had a roll of posters in his office.  So he gave me a couple.

It's a good way to start collecting, but watch out, it doesn't end there.

It was quite hard to find this one, I actually got really lucky with this one. However, I personally find Klaus 2019 the hardest to track down due to limited theatrical run.

Paper posters are still commonly used in Taiwan. Since the size is very similar to U.S. one sheet, some titles are left untranslated. Some newer cinemas have already replaced all paper posters to digital ones, so things could change any second...
I recently found an online seller in Taiwan, who apparently works in a cinema as they have a lot of Taiwanese one sheet with various titles released here. Just a heads-up - not all titles are released here, especially those from smaller studios like Neon or A24. I've just ordered a few to test the quality and reliability, and if they turn out to be good, I'd share the link if anyone's interested in our one sheet.

Art design varies; sometimes it's different (Miyazaki, Disney, Pixar or DreamWorks films), but most of the time it's the same as U.S. final.
