Latest Acquisitions - the ongoing mega thread
« on: October 21, 2024, 07:11:39 PM »
Hi all,

The forum has been very quiet lately and we're unfortunately straying close to the territory of "use it or lose it".

Perhaps some members are a bit too shy to start a new monthly thread? So instead of the usual monthly threads, I thought we could try a cumulative thread, where folk could drop in and share new acquisitions on an ongoing basis.

Please don't be shy, it would be great to see more of the wide variety we collect across the membership here.

Cheers,
Tob

Here are a couple I got round to photographing recently:

The Killer, UK Quad, art by James Paterson.

The Cell, Japanese B1, design by Eiko Ishioka and Toshiya Masuda, illustration by Haruo Takino.

I've been trying to get this one for years with no success (underbidder a couple of times), so when Holiday had a sale at Two Parrots Gallery, I couldn't resist. It's such a well done illustration that you might think it was a photograph, but up close, you can see the texture of the paint and brush strokes.

I haven't seen the Killer, bit generally like Fincher's work. Interesting poster as there used to be a rule that you couldn't have an image of a gun pointing directly at the viewer. Maybe they've relaxed that rule (or maybe it never existed?)

The Cell poster is interesting too. I know nothing about the film so it's an intriguing image. Both posters are interesting examples of illustrations almost looking photographic.

Both very nice additions Tob!

Great posters Tob - the direct eye contact of the characters portrayed is unsettling.

Here are some random older quads I acquired this month -

...and a rare one for Thierry - the first UK release poster for Contempt - aka Le Mepris.

Great posters all.

Love the Killer.  I have never heard of the rule you're talking about, Matt.  I mean, at least in the US, it is blatantly clear that there are absolutely zero rules when it comes to guns, so I can't see how a gun pointed at someone would be any different.

That Cell poster is great.  Too bad Lopez is on it hahaha.

And thanks for rubbing it in, Mark.  This is one of the few posters that are missing in my collection.  I'm jealous (and I'm never jealous of someone else's collection).

That's a lovely selection, Mark. The Frank McCarthy artwork on The Train is really amazing. I'd never seen the quad for Contempt before, so that's interesting to see. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Matt - fascinating about the gun rule. As T asks, is that a UK thing? I'll have to rack my brain to think of other examples.

The Cell isn't my favourite film (like T, I'm not a huge Jennifer Lopez fan), but the director (Tarsem Singh) has a flair for strange and stylish visuals and the costume designs by Eiko Ishioka are gorgeous. He is also known for another film called 'The Fall', which is also very beautiful to look at. I think both films had quite cold initial reactions, but have built a bit of a cult following over the years as they're quite unusual and interesting.

Nice posters everyone!

The gun thing is a UK thing. We do have different rules here, but 'The Killer' poster suggests its no longer in place. This is another example of different rules, you can electrocute pets in the US, but not in the UK apparently!

Maybe I should check 'The Cell' out Tob. I got 'The Fall' on DVD when it first came out and absolutely loved it. Not much to share but I was very happy to get this one from the UK premiere of 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice'

Haha! I do enjoy those little differences in the details! I can see how electrocuting Mr Whiskers would not go down well over here on a poster.

I thought of another 'gun pointing at viewer' design - the quad for John Wick - perhaps the rule changed happened before this came out:

It's not as good as The Fall, but there are some interesting visuals that are similar to The Fall, so you may enjoy it.

I like that premiere artwork for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. I also really respect your dedication to go to the premiere, get a piece that fits your collection really well, then get it home safely at the end! Excellent. Are they usually pretty nice about giving away stuff like that at the end? Or do you have to slip someone a few notes?

Good thinking on the mega thread here. Hopefully this place sticks around.  Personally I think it's better to have quality over quantity with posts. Also, who knows, maybe someday this place will be as busy or busier than it once was.  Thanks to T and H and all for keeping it going

I need to photograph my most recent pick-ups but one I do have a pic of is this quad for a 1973 sf movie released in the UK as The Final Programme and known in the US as The Last Days of Man on Earth. I've long admired the design, which was partially done by Philip Castle (of Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket poster fame), but had avoided picking it up until now as I had hoped to find a rolled example. Couldn't believe it when I found this one.

It's a bit hit and miss to be honest. I've been to a few where I asked when they were setting up if I could have a poster and they happily gave it to me. Most of the time they're too busy to talk so you have to wait around until the end and they're de-rigging. It all gets destroyed so they don't usually have a problem giving them away, although it can be pot luck if you're standing in the right area as to what you get. I find it all very stressful to be honest. Most people are there to see the stars, I'm just happy if I get a poster!

I hope so too seeing as how I just joined this group! Everyone has such cool posters to share here. I have been taking pictures of all my more recent posters coming in so I can start posting them here. I have also been slowly trying to go back and photograph everything that already made it into portfolios or frames before I joined here, so a bit of a pain to take everything out just to grab photos. Hoping in the short term future I can share them via a website, being inspired by some of the websites you all have built up like eatbrie and Tob.

Always nice to see a rolled poster from the 70s. The artwork is intriguing and made me look the film up on imdb...the plot synopsis sounds quite bonkers! I'm curious to see it now.

I usually don't post my new acquisitions, because that's what my website is for, but I'll try to do better.

Been after this for years, a few passed me by, but I stuck to my guns, I wouldn't have it folded or linenbacked.  Finally a nice forum member contacted me a week or so ago and offered me a pristine rolled copy.  Kubrick is one of my little sub-collections that I aspire to expand, one piece at a time, so owning this one was a no brainer.

That’s beautiful, T. I think it’s my favourite 2001 poster (tied with the psychedelic eye). Congrats on getting it in such amazing condition too.

A couple new acquisitions for me recently:

Big Astor fan, so was pleased when this one sheet popped up. Great image and tag line!

I have loved this image of Claude as Cleo for awhile. OS is pretty far out of reach, but the Jumbo Lobby will do nicely. Off to the restorers!

Finally, a fun Crawford Title card:

I've managed to land two of my most sought after quads in the past couple of weeks, rolled examples for the 1980s cult sf movies The Hidden and The Wraith. Absolutely delighted to own both of these.

I sold my soul to the devil and bought a linenbacked poster.  After waiting for a folded copy that never came, I gave in.  I feel dirty.

All together, I already owned 66 of the posters that went on sale today.  Put together, they sold for a good amount for sure.  I did the math and compared it to what I had originally paid, and I am 45% up.  Sounds good but only on paper since those 45% is what HA would have pocketed had I sold my posters through them (I would never because I think it is outrageous).  I have never done this exercise before, and it is a little sad.  I am not selling, so it doesn't really matter, but still, I don't necessarily want some of my kids' inheritance to disappear.  I don't know if it is a sign of the times but some of my better ones sold for less than what I paid for.  Way less in a few instances.  Example: I paid $5,000 for the other Italian style of Dial M for Murder and it sold for $1500.  I almost bought it again.

Great poster, T. I prefer it to the other style. From your analysis, did you seen any obvious patterns in which posters had appreciated the most or least in price?

I've managed to land two of my most sought after quads in the past couple of weeks, rolled examples for the 1980s cult sf movies The Hidden and The Wraith. Absolutely delighted to own both of these.

Congrats, love them both. I've never seen The Wraith, but the quad is such a cool design (surely the film is not as good as the poster?).
