Minty whites v2.0 - Are they back?
« on: August 11, 2024, 03:25:51 AM »
So I've recently come across a couple auctions that have me wondering if perhaps the people behind the infamous minty white inserts didn't go and just up the game and start doing 30x40's? There was a third example I thought I had but can't find the link. If I find it I'll post it.

I mean the current climate of rug-pull crypto scams, call centers in India taking the elderly for tens of thousands of dollars, is just out of control. Crime rings are stealing baby formula out of grocery stores and making bank. Just saying it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that someone is now upping the repro sizes and doing vintage Star Wars posters to scam new collectors. It's like Rolex watches. Everyone wants a sub or Daytona but they're in the stratosphere now, so Air-Kings are going up as collectors look for other potential investment pieces.

Or maybe someone just corrected the white balance/exposure to make it look super white.

I'm looking at these two:

The Thing - 30x40 - looks pristine
https://www.ebay.com/itm/135171865310

Star Wars - 30x40 - also looks brand new
https://www.ebay.com/itm/226278465975

Thoughts?

Maybe, but I don't see it selling much, so not a very lucrative endeavor.  99.9% of people have no idea what a 30x40in poster is and would not buy something with white empty spaces on its sides.  So why even bother?  Just reproduce a 27x41in.

So maybe, but I don't think so.

Agree with Brie.  30x40 is also a bear to display right so the cost of framing also likely keeps people from purchasing.  Just a thought.  That Star Wars does look 'used' though.  Possibly even trimmed?  The NSS info is basically falling off the bottom of the paper.  Hehe.  Star Wars guy is also mostly selling skateboard odds and ends and a few fireworks posters.  Wonder if it's just a dude that used to work in theaters and fireworks stands as a youth and is just getting rid of some things?

That Thing looks like it's never seen the light of day.  Also, I don't know what it is about that seller but the whole one image things makes me pass right on by without even a second thought.  You're trying to sell something for $1000 and you can't be bothered to put more detailed images, or even images that don't have a watermark, in the auction?  Pass.  This seller also seems to always have multiples of everything.  I imagine he's probably using the same image for each one (Empire Style B, he's sold 4.). Not to say that he isn't legit, but it's the type of thing I stay away from.

This!! Literally half (probably way more) of the auctions I see on eBay and even on Facebook marketplace, only have ONE picture. Kind of drives me nuts. Good points above, probably just my ADHD seeing more than is really there.

All of this I fully agree with.

This reminded me of a thread I started way back when - some photos on ckmac.com (now defunct) showed a Videodrome 30x40 with blank borders (no NSS text).  I thought it was strange, possibly fake, etc. but didn't want to ask the question on the forum just for someone to snag the poster before I could buy it haha, but eventually I started the thread just before buying it.  I think the photos were edited somehow with the white balance off or something and that made the borders look blank.  Since then I've been lucky to acquire a few 30x40s and it's one of my favorite formats.

Back to the question, it would be interesting to see if the same process with the minty white inserts could be used to make 30x40s someday.  I think it's possible, but the more years pass, the more difficult it is to pass something that is so new looking.  Most of the 30x40s in my humble collection are very good to excellent condition, but they're definitely not mint condition.  Some folks probably could age the paper somehow, and try using stock, printing processes, etc. similar to or the same as the originals, but who knows how authentic looking they would be to folks who have experience with this format.

That Star Wars seller is local to me in Toronto. I've seen him with numerous Star Wars posters on Facebook Marketplace over the years. They've all looked legit in the past.

The posters in said photos could be legit, but the question to ask is if the seller actually sends the ones pictured or other ones entirely (fakes/boots).

Here is the seller's negative feedback (91 counts, which is excessive), and the common denominator is sending different posters and being rude to buyers.

https://www.ebay.com/fdbk/mweb_profile?fdbkType=FeedbackReceivedAsSeller&item_id=135171865310&username=movieposterbargains&filter=feedback_page%3ARECEIVED_AS_SELLER&sort=RELEVANCE&page_id=1&overall_rating=NEGATIVE&filter_image=false

I remember this guy back in the day 10-16 years ago, and I think he's probably not unlike bradburied...a bunch of legit stuff used to lure buyers who actually receive otherwise.

Note for clarification - the two posters are from different sellers.

The first one, The Thing, is the seller with the negative feedback in the US.

The second, Star Wars, is a different seller with 100% feedback in Canada.
