Prices are becoming too high. People asking a lot more than what they are worth. You have better chance at getting a deal at auction houses now. Even though some auctions still go for high, then you have bidders bidding stupid prices 20 days before auction ends jacking up the price for what reason.. USD is high, shipping costs are too high, taxes and duty fees. All adding up. Becoming a bit harder to collect for me at least.

I have slowed down my poster purchasing by a lot, I think, and for a few reasons.  Mainly, I know what I want and what I don't want.

When it comes to older posters, I will not touch linen unless it is an imperative (like I will not find the poster I want otherwise).  Unfortunately for me and a few others (Antoine for example), it seems that auction houses' folded offerings have become a rarity.  Everything is on linen and I'm not buying.  So that limits a lot.  It was very different 10 years ago.  Way more folded offerings back then.

When it comes to modern posters, it seems that prices have doubled or even tripled since Covid.  Posters are not printed in large quantities anymore and sellers do end up selling their gear at those extravagant prices, so who am I to tell them they are too expensive, but they are.  A new poster for $50 is almost common practice these days.  $50, really?  Sometimes ever higher.  Much, much higher.

Also, I do not buy (or very rarely) international posters anymore, because they pretty much all originate from Thailand or the Philippines and have become perfect bootlegs.  Some are great in their designs, but they are not studio issued original movie posters.

Finally, I have become extremely particular with my modern posters and I want them in mint condition.  For example, "Good to very good" for anything post 1985 at Emovie won't do.  Again, I feel like there used to be more of them.  I guess some have traveled a lot over the years.

As a result, buying is more limited.

I assume you all realize we have quit selling ALL of these international one-sheets with different images. I feel that even if some of them are real, they are SO tainted that I want no part of them.
We (eMoviePoster.com) hold 3,000 to 4,000 auctions every four weeks.
We have auctioned more movie paper for more money (in real sales) than any auction in the world.
We have the longest continuously running auctions of any auction, with over 1,948,280 to date from over 3,306 consignors.

I had not realized that, but good on you, Bruce.

I recently bought a couple of Alien: Romulus international posters because I liked the concept, knowing very well that they were not studio issued.  A few sellers are honest enough to say that the international posters they are selling are probably fake, but most don't, and it's a shame.  Like you said, Bruce, a few are probably real (they used to be 5 years ago), but unless you have a direct contact at the studios, it is impossible to verify.  Too bad.  It will soon happen to domestic posters and then I'll stop buying those too.

Hi Bruce - how do you differentiate between the tainted ones and the international posters you do auction? e.g. this one - https://auctions.emovieposter.com/Bidding.taf?_function=detail&Auction_uid1=6859018 - if it's a trade secret you'd rather not share as to not alert the bootleggers, then no problem.

I agree, new releases are quite pricey these days, less supply and perhaps more demand (for the better films or designs).

I did not know that was a disputed title. I will ask Matt tomorrow and get back to you.

Sorry Bruce, I didn’t mean to imply it is a disputed title, I was just curious as to whether there were ‘tells’ for the tainted ones. If it’s simply that some titles are at risk and others not, that’s good to know, I’ll continue to bid on the international poster you auction with peace of mind.

I honestly think it's all of them, including the Spidey you posted, Tob.

It's like signatures.  I think they're all bogus, either signed by some assistant at the time or signed by forgers.  But certainly not signed by the star.  And even if it is, there is no way to know.  Then time goes by, someone prints a COA and it becomes legit and people spend hard earned dollars on a poster signed by an 18 year old pimpled face in 1955.  It really comes down what you want to believe.

Same with international posters.  Since no one knows for sure which international posters are legit and which are not, it becomes a matter of what you want to believe.  If you like the art and if it doesn't matter, go for it.  I do, from time to time, like I did with Romulus, but I know they're bootlegs.  Or at least, that's what I believe.

Tob

I looked up the past 3 and they came from good consignors, and NOT from the people who send the disputed ones.

The ones we no longer sell ARE the ones that come from sellers known the sell bootlegs. As I said, I don't care to try to distinguish between "good" and "bad" because those titles are now so tainted.

But everyone makes their own choices.
