May 2022

I just received these 2 fun and quite rare 1950s posters, a 6-sheet for The Creature Walks Among Us, and a first release Italian 2F for When Worlds Collide.  I love the vibrant colors and graphics on Creature Walks Among Us.  I already have a 6-sheet for the other sequel in the Creature trilogy, so now I just need the one for Creature from the Black Lagoon to complete the set.

Nice Antoine.  A question.  Have you seen any of these titles?  Most of them are obscure to me, and it makes me wonder how important it is to you to have seen them, or if you're just collecting by genre (sci-Fi/horror, obviously) and design.

Yes, of course I've seen those movies, they're considered classics of 1950s sci-fi, particularly When Worlds Collide.

Generally, I rarely buy a poster for a movie that I haven't seen, and when I do, I try to track down the film so that I can watch it.  This isn't to say that I always like the movie that the poster advertises: in the case of 1950s sci-fi, there are a lot of terrible titles with fantastic art, so I'm quite willing to overlook any artistic deficiencies if the poster is visually appealing to me.

I get it.  Not everyone collects this way, but I do, and it's nice to hear that you do too.  I've never seen these titles, so I don't collect them, which is fine by me because I get to admire them in other people's collections.  Win win :)

But seriously, that is a gorgeous piece of paper. The condition is remarkable (love that there doesn't seem to be any paper-loss in the upper cross-fold, which always seems to be the case).

Great pick up!!

I have been after original paper on Rain for awhile, so was excited to pick up this lobby at HA. And the condition is pretty mint

Good one, lol!  I'll probably add an extensive airbrushing job to boot ;)

Seriously, I will never understand some folks' aversion to fold lines.  I look at this as being part of the history of the poster, so having visible fold lines has never been a problem to me.  To each is own, I guess.

That's a great LC for Rain, Starling!  Not an easy title to find any original paper from, it's usually stuff from the later 1938 re-release that shows up on the market, so congrats.

This looks incredible! Are you framing this and hanging it on the wall? I’d love to see it once you frame it!

Thanks!  And yes, I already dropped it at the framer yesterday.  Not sure where I will hang it yet, I'll have to find a good spot for it, that's alway part of the fun for me.

MOST examples of this iconic poster have paper loss at the top crossfold, which unfortunately falls in Lake's temple, and is super noticeable, even after restoration.

It is so great to see one with no loss in that area. You might consider having the poster "pressed and flattened". I don't consider it restoration, and it greatly reduces how noticeable fold lines are.

But like you, I am not bothered by minor flaws posters pick up over decades. If I wanted "perfect", I would buy a repro!

That’s cool, steve5635. King Ghidorah is one of my favourite monsters.

Congrats on such a gorgeous poster, Antonine! A classic.

I bought this rolled quad for the 1960s BBC film The War Game at a local used bookstore - the store owner said he had acquired it, along with two other copies, from the estate of celebrated designer Romek Marber, who was responsible for this poster. My copy has a few flaws, including a closed tear in the middle of the image, but I thought it was unusal enough to pick up regardless. It was also a lot cheaper than the other two, apparently, which had already been sold before my visit, and which I assume were in better condition.

Marber died in 2020 and is best known for his ground-breaking work for Penguin paperback books.

Incidentally, the film was highly controversial in its day - the BBC refused to rebroadcast it for years (hence the theatrical release) and it even won best documentary at the Oscars, despite being a work of fiction. The Academy changed the rules for the category after that!

R1970 Throne of Blood 47"x71", roughly the size of a US three sheet. Not often I say this but I am not sure how I feel about this buy.
