Rich, I based my comment on what was shown in the teeveeola segment.  I was assuming they pulled out the best stuff for that, and there was a lot of chaff among that wheat.  I doubt those pug fugly western posters or "Citizen Kane" reissues are going to set the poster world on fire.  I was also only considering the movie posters, as I have little to no interest in travel posters, and I presume that might also be an issue for the collection, although from the website I see they at least had the good sense to separate them out.  Maybe there's tons of value in them, I just don't see it (from what's available) in the movie posters.

Peter, it's obvious that the auctioneer doesn't know movie posters very well, but I find it hard to believe that a guy who has 2 rare French King Kong posters worth a lot of money doesn't have other like-value posters. Also, it's obvious he has lots of non-movie posters that could add up quickly

here is some blind estimation that I like to use

7000 posters

if he has:

1000 posters worth $25 (all prices quoted are retail prices) = $25,000
1000 posters worth $50 = $50,000
1000 posters worth $100 = $100,000
1000 posters worth $250 = $250,000
1000 posters worth $500 = $500,000
500 posters worth $1000 = $100,000
500 posters worth $2000 = $1,000,000
200 posters worth $3000 = $600,000
200 posters worth $5000 = $1,000,000
======================
6400 posters ............... $4,025,000

or how about this
7000 posters worth an average of $100 each = $700,000 then add all kinds of money for $500 posters, $1000 posters etc until you get to the KK posters which should be worth $50k-$100k each and all kinds of other posters worth something in between $100 and $5000

it adds up very quickly as a retail value

by the way, I'll go further in another fashion.

I have thousands of posters in my own collection as well as art, comics etc. I've never evaluated them as a collection and I do have lots of sub-$100 posters.

I have no doubt that minimally my collection is worth $1-2mil at retail prices. maybe even considerably more
then I also have stock.
it adds up quickly

wholesale value rises and falls based on the quality of the material in total
$1.2mil for that collection as a dealer price may be close to on the money. It could also not, but he would have to have scads of useless posters to bounce the values down for all the Big Sleep, Casablanca and Kong French posters

I don't disagree too much Rich, after Ari pointed out the per unit price I do see the possible value.  My point was that for this auction, asking for very large lump sums for batches means you're either looking for a wealthy punter or institution (unlikely) or a dealer (way more likely) who has enough spare cash to let it sit in inventory while they're disposed of at closer to retail prices.  I just took issue with the auctioneer's expectation that THIS auction will result in a $2 million dollar haul.  Tell you what, if it makes $2 million AUS hammer price, I'll buy you a case of beer.

The sad thing is if you read between the lines it's likely that the deceased collector wanted his collection to stay whole and that's why they're being auctioned like this.  Unfortunately I just don't see any other scenario other than it being broken up about 15 seconds after they're received by the new owner/s.  Sort of a lesson for collectors I think.  We like this crap a lot more than anybody else does and there's probably not a person on the planet who would keep what we've accumulated as a unit.

That Australian gallery exhibition looks wonderful. 6000+ posters is incredible.

I was looking thru some of the things they are offering for sale and am not quite getting the $1250.00 AUS selling price for a french poster from 1998's BABE. IMO, this price seems a bit off the charts.  :o

Peter, while it must be initially sold as a group as per the owner's request, if the heirs wanted to, they could break such a tenet with legal help if it was true they could achive more money going another way, and the attorneys would be happy to get extended time frames enabling them to get more fees.

but you are correct that once it gets sold, the buyer is not held by any such tenet & seeing as I doubt any institution will be a buyer (they want such collection donated. otherwise they buy individual items they're looking for) the dealer or dealers that buy it will definitely break it up before they even get full possession

I think the . is in the wrong place. $12.50 seems more reasonable and likely.

Some great stuff, but not enough to make me want to rob a bank. Too many `foreign' posters for my liking

I think it would be more profitable for them to separate each country of origin poster. Might get a few thousand people fighting for each lot. But oh well them's the breaks. Cheers Rick!

I did suggest that, give us poor bottom-feeders some sort of chance of grabbing a few at least.
